Is anyone else worried about this? Right now I'm panicking about the prospect of a plague-like breakout here in the UK. What do you guys think?

There have been several diseases that were suppose to kill millions of people in the US in the last 5 years or so. The one that got me was west nile virus. Its fatality rate was low for its hype. The avian flu is probably going to be the same way. It might mutate you say? Well look at all the other diseases like this that cant be transmitted easily. They have yet to mutate. So, I doubt this one will. Also scientists are probably already working on ways to counter this disease in some way. I doubt this is anything to even fear.

Good point tho. All types of Flu have the (rather nasty) ability to adapt to new hosts very quickly through mutation.

meh, i dont see any reason to worry.
Either it doesnt come, and i would have worried for no reason.
It Does come, but has not mutated and is easily cured, which will again mean that i would have worried for no reason.
Or, it comes and have mutated, in which case there is nothing to do short term, which means that worry is useless.

Not one single drop.

Obviously this disease is indeed hyped up, however you should consider that if it will mutate it will kill people without there being a cure on the short term. Look at what the spanish flu did (the spanish flu by the way had a killing rate of only 2 percent). And allthough the Spanish flu did come at a very bad time for a disease to come it still showed that people die quite easily by disease.

I think I'll just be happy people found out and are having a look at the disease, know it's coming and taking precautions. I'll just keep my fingers cross for it not to mutate.

Thanks for that Buzz. Don't know what I did to deserve that but hey.

I agree with the media exaggerating everything however, they have a tendency to do that.

I think this is a very good example of the evils of the mass media.

There is absolutely NO need to panic. We are not all going to die of bird flu. All the medical experts agree on this. It is a respiratory infection - they only way you are going to catch it is if you spend all your time kissing chickens/pidgeons etc.
People who are at risk of developing this disease = poultry workers. These people know what to look for in their birds and how to contain it. It is not in their interests to have this virus in their stock. Other people with diabetes etc will already have had flu jabs, as they do every year because flu strains are monitored CONTINUOUSLY (BECAUSE THEY MUTATE - THIS IS NOT A WORRY).

As an aside, why calling it avian/bird flu is new I don't know. The origins of ALL influenza viruses is from the noses of ducks in China...

So to repeat:
The press is evil and likes making mountains out of mole-hills.

It hasn't mutated yet though. It can't be transmitted from person to person. Once it does mutate and actually might be a problem. Until that does occur and its shown to be deadlier than the current strains of flu then all your paranoid hypochondria is not justified. But you can go put your bubblesuit on if you really want to.

As said on a BBC comedy program (possibly QI or 7 Days 7 Words) "We've been looking for a plague to wipe out the chavs for some time."

I like to think I have a strong immune system, mostly because I live in a small university town and I'm exposed to illnesses from all over the country at least 3 times a year.

Ah the great influenza scares. Actually any disease scare.

LOOK OUT THE SARS IS COMING TO GET YOU!!!!! Even though SARS had a lower mortality rate than even the flu. It still generated a huge hype.

And who remembers the big scare last year? The US had to get rid of a large quantity of the vaccinations for the flu it had ordered. Wasn't it something like half? You of course heard about that increase in deaths since not as many people got vaccinated didn't you? I know I sure didn't.

The Avian Flu. This thing is unable to be transfered from person to person yet. It has actually resulted in 65 deaths worldwide in the last 2 years. If it were able to transfer person to person, then there might be some justification for the hype. But it hasn't even happened yet.

Go worry about getting hit by a truck, or contracting mad cow or something.

New reassuring information:

The birds that catch the disease don't have a long lifespan anyway, so little chance they'll have time to pass it on.

Not even any human flu has been reported in as far away places as Romania yet, let alone UK.

Scientists are travelling to infected places to research possible vaccinations against the disease.

/me relaxes, for now

I have an inept fear of illness. Don't ask why 'cause im not sure. I'm much more scared of this than falling off the grand canyon wearing nothing but pink underwear.

Still, like Monteeeeeeeee said, no need to worry. Britains prepared!

To put it in a British way.

OI NUTTA! BRING IT!

That's pretty much my feeling on this.
And if it does happen? Well I'm not all that bothered by the slightly increased chances of catching a plague-like desiese and dying right now.
I say pity the people most at risk rather than go cower in the corner.
