Battlefront 2 | |

Okay, first impressions. It's better than the first, no doubt, but still not up to snuff. -This is by the guys who brought is Battlefield 2, right? So how come there's no built-in VOIP? Sheesh! -You can't go prone. Yeah, you read that right. You can crouch. You can jump. You can't lay down. This is a standard feature in all modern games of this genre. -You can't lean to the side. This is a pet peeve of mine with a lot of these games. In Enemy Territory you can lean to the side to peek around a corner, but you can't shoot around a corner. Then in SOF2 (if memory serves) you could actually lean around a corner and shoot. I thought, "Great! Now every FPS will have to have this feature," but in fact very few have, even some of the better ones. Call of Duty, one of the truly outstanding ones, has it, but they all should. Battlefront 2 doesn't have it. ![]() -No fire support. Shouldn't we be able to call in orbital bombardments and stuff like that? -I'm still trying to figure out why battle droids drop bacta canisters when they die, but I don't mind picking them up when I need them. -Supposedly they were going to expand the original maps. Maybe they did, but I can't tell--though I've only played for a couple of hours so far. They certainly added more detail, which is a good thing. I would have been happier with a bunch of all-new maps, rather than maps that remind me of my disappointment with the first one. -As with the first one, indoor combat tends to be each team crowding around one side of a doorway or other choke-point hurling thermal detonators at one another--a very un-Star-Wars feel to it that I didn't like in the first game and don't like in this one. At some point in Star Wars game lore, a thermal detonator became a grenade with a small blast radius. Sorry, but a thermal detonator was pretty clearly established as something that could level a significant portion of Jabba's palace, a mini-freakin'-nuke, not a close-combat weapon. Most of the indoor battles in the movies were with blasters, and here again you should be able to lean around corners and fire. -Reviewers complained that space was lame. I'm withholding judgement until I've played some more, but I actually kinda liked it. When you're flying a fighter, you can double-tap a strafe key, and it'll do a slick barrel-roll. Double-tap the S key, and you'll do an Immelmann! The default is third-person view of your fighter, but I found that really awkward to pilot. I want to fly from the first-person, and you can configure it that way. The first-person view, however, is rather lacking. You don't see your cockpit. It's like you're flying through space on your own like Superman, with a targeting reticule floating in front of you. -Heroes. I was skeptical about this, but in the single-player I've done so far they're all right. The game does not have a complete dueling engine built into it--play JK2 or JK3 for that. It's a different style of game, and the focus is on tactics and the battlefield usefulness of a Darth Vader or whomever. The hero animation is slick and quite satisfying. I haven't seen any heros in multiplayer yet--I don't know if a hero can respawn, but if he can I would consider that quite lame. -Guys scurry to fast, too hard to hit. If you've ever played SoF2 on a server where the admin cranks up the running speed to some ridiculous number that makes everybody move like the Flash, you know what I mean. No, it isn't that bad, but movement is still pretty spastic compared to ET, CoD, SoF2, Battlefield 2, etc. -I haven't seen a server with a capacity of more than 40 players. I don't know how many the game can support, but 64 is a must for a game like this to be taken seriously and stack up against other multiplayer FPS games. If I were LucasArts I would make certain that on release day there'd be a number of public servers running that support 64 players. We want massive battles, not little skirmishes. On the whole, I was left with the feeling that they really rushed development because they were eager to push it out the door and make more money, especially after they made megabucks on the first one. But the first one was a big disappointment. It made big bucks because everybody bought it the very first day. The second one too, is just trading on the Star Wars name, and they've cut way too many corners: No VOIP No shooting around corners No dropping prone No cockpit view in the fighters People complained that the first one had big maps with very little detail. For the sequel, instead of making gigantic, highly detailed maps, they've simply added detail to the old maps. That's another corner cut. The maps that are new are either not big enough or not detailed enough. There's a really nifty map that seems to take place on Princess Leia's ship at the beginning of Ep IV, but while the detail is good it isn't nearly big enough. In the space maps the ships should have a lot more interior detail, not just five or six rooms; come on, the rest of the map is the empty void of space, so throw me a bone here. Instead of cutting corners to crank out the profits in minimal time, they should have done the opposite, put that extra effort into it to make every little detail count. Small things mean a lot. Ever fly the helicopter in Battlefield 2? When you fly near a tree, the leaves and branches shake from the wind. That's quality. It's completely unnecessary to gameplay, but it's that kind of attention to detail that makes a good game great. _______________ My signature is only one line. You're welcome. |

You know java, back when they announced that jedi knight: jedi academy was being made so soon after jk2, I criticized the speed of production. Sounds like after your playing of battlefront 2, you've arrived at that conclusion for this set of games. You think I should go back and find my comments and tell everyong "I told you so"? ![]() _______________ When you are going through Hell, keep going. -Sir Winston Churchill. in battle front 1 you could prone.. Im personaly glad for my xbox play its been remove.. for me it woudl been pretty useless and taking up valuable time when moving from crouch to standing. Besides its all about time.. so I rarely even crouch. *EDIT* one.. Batle front 2 was desing as third person.. so yes there is no cockpit when in first person.. thir person much better for ship batle IMO anyways.. I personalyl think space batttle kicks butt.. a bit lacking of what I was hoping.. but still cool. All it all its great to have for xbox since you can do like galatic conquest 2 vs 2 ( where you try taking over planets, etc. ) on the same console and a fun game to kick with friends.. but for all those with fast computer PCs, Id probally say battle field 2 is the way to go. ( i got battle front 2 for xbox ) Anyhow.. the point about people 'currying' to fast.. you got a point they can changes directions to swift.. even the guys with beeping rocket launchers.. its its really messed up when trying to hit someone. as for the leaning thing.. there is a reason wolfenstien had it so you can shoot lean around corners.. it would suck and ruin teh gameplay if could for certain games... I mean you know how hard it woudl be to have your body behidn a wallk lean, into a door frame with you WWII machine fun and then shoot with perfect accuracy effortless... and then every military troop on the field doing it... im sorry i rather they crouch behind a crate.. stand up shoot and crouch again.... even with rainbowsix having profesionaly trained peoepl with modern gun.. the lean shooting just looked cheesy. Also battle front 2 with leaning around corners in third person.... lets say I dont even see people taking full advantage of just crouching behind objects... _______________ "Darkness is simply the absence of Light" "Is it not easier to snuff out the light completely than to make no shadow or darknes at all and create pure light?" I played the beta version of multiplayer a few times. It was pretty disappointing. I actually enjoy BF1 more. Heroes in MP have a clock they run on. Once that time limit hits, if you're not already dead, you die and switch to a normal combatant. Then another player gets to be the hero. The vehicles are pretty cool. Alot of Episode III ones are put in. Space combat is pretty much what people would expect. A mix of Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to Lightspeed and Freelancer. All in all, Battlefront 2 has alot more content in it, but it's basically the same as the first. If you didn't enjoy Battlefront, you won't enjoy it's sequel. Personally, I'd much rather play the first one. _______________ - Proud padawan of Kueller. - We really are at the beginning of it all.
