Ok, for those of you who still play Star Wars Galaxies, you're well aware that yet another CU is coming out within the month. I'm sure you remember the first CU, which totally ruined the game for most of it's players at first. There they added combat levels, took away stat migration, toned down the doctor profession (now they are as useful as entertainers), amongst other things. Well, if you thought that was bad, check the following links to see what they are changing now: Letter from the game producer Julio Torres General NGE (New Game Enhancement) FAQ Let's take a look at this shall we? First and foremost, there will now only be 9 professions. That's right, you read that correctly. 9 professions. These include Bounty Hunter, Commando, Entertainer, Medic, Officer, Smuggler, Spy, Trader, and last but not least, Jedi. Yes, Jedi will now be it's own profession no different from the rest. What's the point of this "enhancement" you might ask. According to studies from players, fan bases, and outside critics the game has too much content. In other words, it's too hard for a brand new player to learn everything there is to know about the game in 1 day. Also, in opposition of what the game was originally designed for, the profession revamp gives players the chance to play the role of their favorite Star Wars characters, rather than play their own role in the SW universe. Let's move on to an issue just as severe. Items will no longer decay. The economy of SWG revolves around crafting, the decaying of items, and purchasing replacements for them. Without item decay, crafters will now be screwed. Along with this, the economy of SWG will also be screwed. Now people will buy the best weapons, clothes, vehicles, etc., and never have to replace them. Goodbye crafters. All in all, the beauty that made SWG different from all other MMORPGs is being stripped out of the game. Not only that, but everyone and their mothers will be a Jedi. Now everyone will be the same professions, carry the same weapons, wear the same armor and so forth. Reminds me of Guild Wars. Sony has really done it this time. They took a freaking awesome game, added some of Slider's coding, and made it a game for every 10 year old to enjoy. some veteren players on my server (farstar) have said that they are enjoying Mustafar in the new system, and that it seems to work with it a lot better than other parts of the game at this time. They still think certain bugs, and melee combat balancing needs adressing, along with some other things, but they are giving it some more time as they are more hopeful now. They also agree the beginner quests work well. altough i am interested in the new dark and light game coming out, i'm still going to give swg a few months to sort itself out. _______________ To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield | Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken | Rhaiko D'kana - SWTOR EU Guild Co-Founder | Is it what the teacher, teaches? 90%? Didn't even think it was that many... yet I doubt removing things from a game will attract new players, especially now at a time when the only publicity SWG recieves is through these combat upgrades _______________ Former padawan of RoseRed |

Quote: Although I don't play galaxies anymore, this "upgrade" has astounded me, they were fully aware of the negativity they recieved from the last one, I don't see what would drive them to release another... Gamespy did a Q&A session with Julio Torres. He stated that the last CU had the same uproar, yet in the end they had only lost a very small number of their players. This is a much worse uproar, where SWG is going to lose 90% of it's veteran players, the actual base of the entire community. SOE doesn't care about this. They expect fresh faces to fill up these spots. Chances are that they'll get them too. _______________ - Proud padawan of Kueller. - We really are at the beginning of it all. I was thinking they'll realise tons of players have left their game (if they haven't already) and might use that as one of the ways to bring players back... Probably just wishful thinking on my behalf though _______________ Former padawan of RoseRed |

Certain aspects of it are good. Certain aspects are awful. First and foremost - the Devs wanted to make the NGE be alot more like Star Wars...well then let's see some real Jedi then, shall we? Not a bunch of people running around with glowsticks that can do one or two parlour tricks. Alot of people are saying "Everyone and their dog is a Jedi!" - To that, I say: Of COURSE they are. What are you, a f***ing idiot? There may be more to Star Wars than Jedi, but what IS Star Wars WITHOUT Jedi? What these idiots are really sayin is - "I want to be a Jedi, but I don't want anyone else to be!". Which is retarded, everyone is thinking like you, dips***! The current Jedi system is a joke, is has potential but what do the devs know about that? They never listen to the players. SOE don't realise that they are the Vanilla Ice of the gaming industry. I have mixed feelings about this. Part of me thinks it's kinda cool and part of me hates it with a passion you could only dream of, but I keep playing it in hope that the Jedi profession will be fixed, because right now, alot of the game's aspects couldn't be furthar from Star Wars continuity. I know for a fact that 90% of the devs haven't even played the game - but I wonder how many of them have actually seen Star Wars? - Virtue. _______________ Academy Architect This comment was edited by Virtue on Nov 19 2005 12:40pm. |
