So my friend came up to me with another problem today he had in his homework set thing, and it stump me.

I was wondering if you guys could help out :D

Here's the question,

"Tippy Van Winkle is awakened from a deep sleep by the cukcoo of a clock which sounds every half hour. Before Tippy can look at the clock, his brother Bippy enters the room and offers to bet $10 that the hands of the clock form an acute angle. Assuming that the hands have not moved since the cuckoo, how much should Tippy put up against Bippy's $10 so that it is an even bet?"

Thanks in advance!

obtuse angles are considered to normally be between 90 and 180 degrees. So you only involve that set. If you're saying an obtuse angle exists past 270° then you're not thinking clearly. And even if you want to try to argue that, they still form an acute angle while forming that obtuse angle so its still there.

Cool pic by the way, I actually thought Serenity was pretty good.

possibility of acute angles: 10/24
possibility of obtuse angels: 10/24
possibility of 0° angle: 1/24
possibility of 90° angle: 2/24
possibility of 180° angle: 1/24

If you consider the 0 90 and 180 to not be either acute or obtuse angles then he should be putting $14 up for the bet. If you're putting including them in the acute and obtuse then it would be an even bet of $10 each.

oh yeah :P So it would be acute at everytime except 12:00 and 6:00. Which means 2/24 of a chance that it wont be acute, and 2/24 of $10 is 83.33333333 cents. LOL whatd i do wrong?

There's also the two hands to take into consideration also. The hour and minute hand, they have the ability to make acute angles.

ehhh, wouldnt it nvr be acute since it would either be 0 degrees or 180?
