If anyone knows where I can find a picture of Quang Duc in the act, I would appreciate it. It's for a t-shirt I'm working on. On June 11, 1963, Thich Quang Duc, a Buddhist monk from the Linh-Mu Pagoda in Hue, Vietnam, burned himself to death at a busy intersection in downtown Saigon, Vietnam.. Eye witness accounts state that Thich Quang Duc and at least two fellow monks arrived at the intersection by car, Thich Quang Duc got out of the car, assumed the traditional lotus position and the accompanying monks helped him pour gasoline over himself. He ignited the gasoline by lighting a match and burned to death in a matter of minutes. _______________ I'm crazy, not stupid. |

You have to admit, if you didn't know about this act before you read this thread, you'll remember it for the rest of your life. So, I guess he did achieve something. I agree he achieved something - but he did not achieve what he set out to do, which was put an end to the atrocities. It wasn't only him who set himself alight during that period - many Buddhist monks did the same. None of them ever achieved their intended goal - but as you say, they did achieve something. _______________ Website |

A friend gave me this refrence of this monk for a seperate project I am working on. He suggested using that as inspiration, but in all honesty, it just didn't do it for me. The finished product ended up looking different. The t-shirt is actually for my school's spring semester. Next semesters theme comes from Hebrews 12:29 "For our God is a consuming fire." T-Shirt for the Guys T-Shirt for the Girls I submitted the idea to the main office today, and the administrator took a look at it. Funny thing life. It is yours to do with as you like, yet suicide (or more accurately attempted suicide) is illegal. Silly. This man called attention to an area needing it. Sure it was brutally violent but the real thing to keep in mind is that he never screamed, never called out for help. The power of his mind, his faith, kept his instincts in check and he was released from his mortal coil. To carry on in an afterlife that he believed in. Good convictions are well, good... making sacrifices for those convictions can also be good. But this is just stupidity in my opinion. Technically at the point those pictures are at, he's not on fire its still just the petrol, but either way its not for family entertainment.
