Think about this: Police have far higher rates of alcoholism than the general population. Have you ever heard of a cop being arrested for drunk driving? I have personally witnessed a number of acts of severe police misconduct. While the cops who do these things are a tiny minority, the vast majority of cops turn a blind eye, rationalize or kid themselves that it doesn't matter. The fundamental problem with police is not that they are bad, but that the police are a fraternity, and their loyalty is to one another, not to the law. When a cop breaks the law, other cops think the "honorable" thing to do is to support the law-breaking cop because that's where their loyalties lie--to other cops, not to the law. If their loyalty lay with the rule of law, they would believe that the honorable thing to do is to kick the bastard's ass and throw him in jail. Again, I don't think most cops are bad guys. I think a larger percentage of cops than of the general population are complete sociopaths--I've met a couple--but the majority try to do what's right, even if their cop-fraternity culture gives them a distorted perception of what exactly that is. _______________ My signature is only one line. the old cliche (klee shay) is "it only takes one bad apple to ruin the bunch" this suggests that this type of behavior is "contagious" (speeling hoo kares) meaning that when one cops does it and gets away with it, another cop does it and so on when it comes to this kind of activity I am convinced that only 1% of these events ever, ever make the media. the other 99% get "swept under the rug" "handled administratively" been down this with Olin and a couple others before so I am not going to go off on one of my well known tyrades, I will just say this statement of mine and be done with it The Police forces of the United States, for that matter the world, have a responsibility to Police themselves BETTER than they Police us.
