What do you guys think? I personally would like to eat Lauren Keiser's face.

A few sites have already been shut down from what I've heard. :(

that would suck indeed, because

1) I'm already buying the CD's, not looking forward to buying their music books
2) I'm an intermediate guitarist. I need all the practice I can get man!

Needless to say; my statement to those people confusing tab sites with a site giving away full scores:

It's a mere letter different from:
Go buck yourselves

Nothing to do with Britain in particular, apart from the news website I linked too. But I'm sure it will affect other countries

So, what does this pretain to? Are they going to ban Tabsites run in other countries? I'm assuming this is only happening in Britian at the moment? There's no way they can take all the sites down is there?

I'd say its like making it illegal for you to learn a song just by listening to it.

lol...and next up, anyone who writes down the lyrics for a song in their own handwriting will be subject to prosecution. after that we'll move on to the people who actually remember the words to songs. if you want to remember something that someone made you're going to have to pay for it damnit.

And whenever you sing along to a song (in the shower, on the bus, at kareoke) you'll have to pay royalties to the author!

This is so STUPID.

I bet every single beginning guitarist these days starts learning by checking out some tabs from the Internet. It's educational, entertaining, and really a great way to introduce the artist to the musician.

And besides, tabs are almost always a personal transcription of the song, not a scan-copy-paste of a score book. Banning tabs therefore is analoguous to criminalising book reviews that quote a passage from a novel. Silly!

Like someone said in the article, tabs are just a door-opener: since they are usually pretty inaccurate (I'd say about 75% of all tabs I've ever played through, and that's thousands, have been such) if the player wants a better rendition, he/she will go to the store and buy the score / tab book.

I hate it when this kind of crap pops up. First the lyrics then the tabs. What next? I don't even dare guess.

Dats me!!!

No really, I started out with a guitar teacher, but my main method of learning was from online tab sheets, it was just something that really helps.

Its not uncommon for people to like playing music as much as listening to it. They saying we can't do both now?

Yeah, plus, it's so extremely easy to make tabs. You just take someone who can transcribe a bit, let him/her listen to a song, and here goes:

C G
When I find myself in times of trouble

Am F
Mother Mary comes to me

C G
Speaking words of wisdom

F G C
Let it be!

They're all inaccurate, but I just did that from the top of my head and within a minute. It's like scribbling a few very short notes on paper. Full scores, on the other hand, take a lot of work to put on paper. Which is why I was so surprised at them being treated the same.

Exactly :P

Actually, I've been wondering when musicians are going to make a fuss about other people playing their songs. Since they're the ones who own the right to the song, why should other people be allowed to play it, be it while sitting in their bedroom or playing as a cover band to an audience of 100?

Which also leads to another point. IMO about 75% of pop music is recycled. Since you can only come up with a certain amount of chord progressions and harmonic passages I'm sure that you will find any single melody in any single pop song in some other song if you look hard enough. So in a way, the artists who are grumbling about their product being "stolen" should actually look in the mirror.

^^ OK, that wasn't a really believeable scenario, but tbh, if I were a commercial artist with a record contract etc. I would be HONOURED to hear my tunes being transcribed in the Internet for people to learn on. I mean imagine, my guitarwork being scrutinised with extreme care, tabbed down note by note and then being released in the major music forums to a shower of praise. WOW.

Bottom line is, this is still so stupid.

if its against the law then its against the law, you cant hate people for trying to enforce it. but i understand where you are coming from and i think tabs should be treated differently to full scores

I think there's a huge difference between tabs and complete scores, and I'm surprised that they're not treated seperately.

I'm already paying for their music, that should be enough
