Is anyone else in the Academy a fan of cinema from the far east? Well, I know I am so you can expect some reviews of popular and not-so-popular films right here, in this post!
Saddle up because let me tell you: Asian cinema is the new indie rock. It's being emulated all over the world. Best to get ready for it now :P.

I saw this one movie from japan I believe late at night on the T.V.

It was about a samurai priest who had to travel way high up these stairs to the spirit world to battle an evil half gollum, half troll, dark lord kinda guy. To get there he had to play a special tune on a special flute. I think this might of been a ancient japanese tale/myth made into a movie. He (the young chosen one priest) had a dorky goofy sidekick too I think. It was very weird but very interesting. The young priest/samurai had a big tall blue hat if that helps...anyone know this movie? :P

For my first review I present: Versus
[img=http://img463.imageshack.us/img463/4527/versus23ly.th.jpg]

Quick backstory, a botched meeting between yakuza and two escaped convicts ends in bloodshed. Yakuza dead, one convict dead...or so you are lead to believe. The meeting place is the Forest of Resurrection and when you die in it, you become a zombie. Seriously, a zombie with super strength no less.

Now, caught up in the middle of this is an escaped murderer, a pretty girl, some peculiar yakuza, and a couple of bumbling detectives. I was entertained immediately. This is the all-encompassing "guy movie". Zombies, martial arts, gunplay, swordfights, comedy, samurai, and bullet-time. If anyone becomes bored while watching this film, please email me because I must have you come to Berkley and get your brain examined. There is so much going on in the two hours it seems like you've seen multiple movies.

This type of bare-knuckle action film is the hal mark of the director: Ryuhei Kitamura. This was one of his first films and he has since become a legend in Japan, gaining a huge following in the US as well. He's had the Midas touch lately and is just coming off his success with the new Godzilla: Final Wars. Needless to say, his is a name to watch.
Now, why would the average person want to watch Versus? Because I guarantee you'll see some things you've never seen before. For a jaded movie-goer like me, fresh cinema is what it's all about.

Oh and P.S: best ending ever. And no I won't tell you:P.

My grandma on my dad's side watches Chinese cinema all the time. I haven't really seen any extremely awesome ones, but the ones I saw were okay. They weren't too appealing to me.

I do however love martial arts movies, I can't get enough of them.

Asian cinema that isn't martial art related can be allright. However, i only saw one.. it was some historical one.. subtitles of course. It freaked me out for a while.. can't remember why but whatever it was it gave me an irrational phobia of the television for a bit.

Got over it eventually... I was missing Simpsons.

(Nah, jk man, what i've seen is pretty cool)
