I'd like to see evidence of a real example of that.

I'm not a fan of the FTC or the FDA, mind you, but I get a kick out of how "alternative medicines" always revolve around conspiracy theories. If a cure is real, it's easy to get funding to conduct double-blind studies to prove its efficacy and make a fortune. It takes far too many years because of the FDA, yes, but it's funny how advocates of "alternative" medicine run screaming from double-blind tests where their "cures" are actually compared to placebos.

well if a case ever comes out of this it will likely end up being found unconstitutional if it really does violate free speech.

An irony of this is that when the Founding Fathers were fighting for our freedoms, anonymous pamplets were specifically something they had in mind because that was one of their main tools to speak out against opression. The right to speak one's mind without fear of violent reprisal is essential to a free society.

This is a recurring issue where I live--the "blogosphere" debate started a couple years earlier in my community. A group of affluent, mostly White, people wanted the taxpayers to fund a fat housing subsidy for people making $64,000 a year (!). People making, for example, $15,000 a year would not be eligible for the handout but would be paying for it, so needless to say they were pretty upset, but when they spoke out against it they would receive nasty phone calls at all hours and sometimes got their property vandalized in the wee hours. So a local group set up a web forum where people could speak out without fear of reprisal. The local newspaper called them a cyberspace "KKK" and even published a cartoon depicting them as the Klan, although it was the paper and its supporters whose tactics actually resembled those of the Klan. (Later the paper published an editorial praising an angry mob that trashed a local restaurant, but it still continue the rhetoric that the paper's critics, not the paper, is the KKK.)

If that debate happened today, the newspaper editor could call the police because people in the lower income brackets were "annoying" him by disagreeing anonymously.

Freedom of speech is a big joke if it only means freedom to say what the local mafia tells you to say.

Come on now, every Generation X boy wanted to be Luke Skywalker. Is it because he was a whiney farm boy from some backwater hack planet? No, it's because he was a FREAKING JEDI. He could block lasers with his lightsaber. He could levitate droids & rocks & crap with his mind. Come on, he choked two pig dudes with just a simple gesture. He cut off Darth Vader's hand and kicked him down a flight of stairs. He got his @$$ zapped by lightning from the geezer Emperor, stood up and said "s'at all you got b!tc#??"

once again the disconnect between good intentions and reality comes to light :P

Quote:
Our esteemed politicians can't seem to grasp this simple point, but the First Amendment protects our right to write something that annoys someone else.

It even shields our right to do it anonymously. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas defended this principle magnificently in a 1995 case involving an Ohio woman who was punished for distributing anonymous political pamphlets.
