Anyone else think Australia's going to get smashed by Japan?

Man, for most of the match it certainly looked like it. Then Australia completely took over in the final minutes and ended up with 3-1. I'm rooting for the Aussies, but mostly because their coach is Dutch. ;)

Same here, Hiddink rocks.

When Robben's in good shape, he's in amazing shape. People go 'wtf' when I tell them I've met him a few times: he went to school in my city. :) The dude's only one year older than I am. Of course, now that he's had his breakthrough he's hardly around, but I heard he still visits.

The Dutch team did alright this afternoon but could've been so much more focused. Of course, the weather played a major part. I'm hoping the conditions will improve.

Yeah we saw some good matches already and I'm sure we'll se lots of more, especially the knockout ones.

Netherlands played well, but that was mostly because of Robben. They'll have to play a bit better if they want to win the cup. Don't think they will tho, imo the best chances has got Brazil followed by France.

Of course it would be fun to see some not-favorised teams to get far too. That's always interesting. This year's World Cup's gonna be great for sure.

Holland just won it's first match against S&M!

Not a great game, but the goal by Robben was pretty nice.

Yeah i watched that game, some nice moments in it, and it wasn't one sided which was good. Although Serbia & Montenegro never really created the good goalscoring chances they perhaps should of in the second half.

Nice job Holland, they look very strong going forward!

argentina vs ivory was a good match yes.
argentinas defense was much better than ivory coasts. ivory coast had uber fast and pretty technical players but they were stopped pretty well :( well ivory coast lost the match but i dont think that means something, they should show something cool in later matches i think.
referee was questionable...

hmmm the sweden vs trinidad&tobago match :D
duh sweden sucked tbh thats why they didnt win.
i think theyll try harder in next match.

- The referee in all honesty was crap. He gave Gerrard a yellow card for not touching his opponent, stopped the players from getting a drink of water as it was over 30 degrees C on the pitch.

I agree, terrible ref.

Quote:
- The first half was great. I don't have any complaints apart from the poor refereeing.

Actually while i felt England looked good in the first half, especially at the start, i feel there were a couple of negatives, for example they should of been able to add at least one other goal looking at the state paraguay were in in that half. Perhaps it was the heat and the fact it was the first game.

Quote:
- In the second half, everything went downhill. Sven takes off Owen (a striker) for a defender/midfield who goes by the name of Stuart Downing. Nice one Sven. We're winning 1-0 and you take off an attacker? Not your best idea. Actually, as a matter of fact, as said by John Motzen (commentator), all of Sven's substitutions of the last 5 years have been VERY VERY poor. Crouch needed Owen with him. End of story.

I felt this was a bad substitution as well, Crouch looked isolated up front, and the 4-4-1-1 formation they slipped into was terrible at least initially. Joe Cole was playing very well on the wing, and i felt it took time for him to adjust to his new position. Downing himself didn't have a bad game though.

Personally i stick by my opinion that Sven made a bad decision leaving out Defoe, seeing as he did not replace Owen with Walcott, he is obviously not 100% confident of Walcott's abilities. In my opinion it would of even been better to replace Rooney with a striker with more match fitness.

Lastly i think he made a bad move brinigng on Hargreaves, thats mainly my opinion however. I have just never seen Hargreaves truly stand out, Carrick on the other hand does, can pass the ball well (something they needed) and works well in a defencive role (which they also needed). In fact Carrick is so good at that role that Manchester Unitied have recently tried to buy him from Tottenham, thankfully Spurs turned them down ;):P

Heh just my opinions on the match :) Anyone watch the Argentina or Swedan games? I missed them :( i heard that Argentina/Ivory Coast was a good match.

yeah the game got a bit chaotic. about the sub though... owen is good, thats why u must sub him.
the play got so chaotic with lots of fouls etc and as far as i know owen had an injury not so long ago(i could be wrong though) so anywayz was it worth keeping him there with danger of getting him eliminated for the rest of the championship? the substitution was well done, as for commentator, i dont hear him , but ppl like to annoy famous ppl so that was probably it hehe :)

Well, he'd just played 90 minutes in a friendly BEFORE the World Cup...so why take him off after 55 IN the World Cup?

He was playign crap, england played crap, sven changd to reinforce the midfield to try and get the 3 points by holding them off.. England cannot play early afternoon matches in such heat, I bet u money they play better during the week at evening time

Ivory coast match was alot more paced because it was cooler... wait till mid week we will see england shine and he wont sub owen then :)

Right, a few comments about that game (England vs Paraguay)

- The referee in all honesty was crap. He gave Gerrard a yellow card for not touching his opponent, stopped the players from getting a drink of water as it was over 30 degrees C on the pitch.

- The first half was great. I don't have any complaints apart from the poor refereeing.

- Paraguay DOMINATED the last half an hour apart from a nice few shots from Lampard and Crouch.

Anybody else got any comments about the game?

First interesting thing I've noticed from the games yesterday is the way the ball flies. You can see it especially with Lahms goal. This could mean we will be seeing a lot of goals this tournament, and its gonna be a bit of a nightmare for goal keepers. Another good thing is it means Stevie G should be able to rifle them in from about a mile and a half away.

MON ENGLAND! Prediction for this afternoon: 3-1 to England, including one for crouch ;)
