Video/Television referee

Some of you seem to think a video/television ref would slow down the game. That's utter bullsh*t. Because FIFA have said it will, everybody believes them, I personally dont believe a word FIFA say, they are a bunch of greedy, self preserving, money grabbing, manipulating, douche-bags, and, on the contrary, the game would not be affected anywhere near as bad as some of the time-wasting tactics being used by most teams these days. Especially in tournaments as big as the World Cup.

The TV referee, who would hopefully be impartial, would watch the game as we do, they would have all camera angles available and the option of Slo-Motion technology. Hell, we could go as far to say he would be the "Big Brother" of football matches.

Example: That disgraceful decision to award Italy a penalty against Australia, eveything that happened would still happen, the Aussie defender would commit himself, the Italian diver would take his tumble, still leaving his trailing leg stiff and behind him to ensure contact, and the referee would award the penalty. While all the argueing would be taking place the TV referee would re-wind and have another look. They would notice the Italian diver in all his glory and whisper into his microphone to the referee who had been hoodwinked and as a result, the situation and result would change. A nod of the head, a yellow card out of his pocket for diving and simulation and everybody's happy (or atleast the result would be fair). The Socceroos are awarded a free-kick instead of that very controversial penalty. And there we have it, controversy over! Hardly, if any, time would be wasted.

Example 2: The second goal awarded to Brazil against Ghana, as we saw it on television, was clearly off-side. Now, the goal would be awarded because the linesman didn't notice the goal scorer was offside 2 or 3 times during the build-up, the Ghanaian players would still have gone running to appeal to the linesman, the TV ref would re-wind and notice without a shadow of doubt that Adriano was clearly off-side, a whisper into his microphone, a nod from the referee and the decision is reversed, free-kick to Ghana. Controversy over.

Though, you have to believe me here, I am not talking about very close decisions like small free-kicks by the half-way line, I am talking about blatent errors. The one's that leave a bitter taste in people's mouth. This has certainly happened in this World Cup, Euro 2004 and there was a fair amount of controversy surrounding a decision that involved Korea and Spain in 2002 which resulted in Spain being knocked out in a penalty shoot-out. If you didn't know what happened, 3 goals disallowed when, in actual fact, all should have been given. With the amount of technology available something needs to be done.

There are two options FIFA could take:

Option 1: Take away the technology from the viewers
Option 2: Give the technology to the referee's and linesmen, thus bringing in video/television referees.

Simple and easy. It would not waste time or slow the game down, it would only enhance the game and we, the paying public, would be much happier. I want to see the correct decision and the right result, even if it doesn's favour my team. One thing I DON'T want is to leave the stadium feeling robbed or conned.

Obviously, it would take time to bring in all this "new technology" and I'm not denying it. But let's face facts here. Would you rather stop watching a game and your team has lost because of some lame-ass dubious decision, or would you rather start putting all this technology in right away so we only have to bare it for many a year or 2 more. I'm going with the latter.

If people thought that it would slow the game down considerably, then why not let the manager have 3 "lives" ,so to speak, per game of proving the referee and linesmen on the field wrong. If they get it right, no lives are lost. If they get it wrong, lives are lost. Simple as. They've used it in Tennis now and their little Hawk-Eye tool so why not bring it into football? Tennis lasts longer and nobody cares. Who cares if the game finishes 5 minutes later. Is it really something to worry about? Hell, when you think about it, the 5 minutes could be used for the players to recuperate and take in fluids. This would give the game an extra edge.

So in my opinion, there's really nothing bad coming out of this idea, only positives.

Well, rant over. Your turn :P

They do it in Hockey. In funky situations the refs call "upstairs" where some dudes rewind the tape on a screen and tell the refs exactly what went on. Of course in hockey the clock is stopped so they don't have to worry about wasting time too much.

The thing about soccer is there are no commercials during play. Air time is expensive. Time is money. Without commercials they worry about every second that goes by without action. It's not just about the game ending 5 minutes later.

hmm they got really pissy about refereeing in rugby league here, now every try you see scored gets '3rd umpired' which is indicated same way as in cricket and the video referee reviews the try and his decision comes up on a big electronic billboard thing.

Frankly I think it ruined the referee's confidence a bit but it is more fair.

Also, in the NFL, only certain things on a play can be challenged. And even depending the ruling on the field will determine if a play can be challenged or not along with a timelimit to review.

That's pretty much exactly how it works in American football. Except they only get 2 a game, wether they are right or not. So that pretty much guarantees they won't do it:P

of course it will slow the game down it should be used only when there is doubt, very isnt very often so yeh it would work but people will want it on every foul etc... only when the ref feels it nessacery should it be used.

I think in American football each team can use it twice a game if they feel the need so it dont slow the gmae down by being used 100000 times a game.

not sure on the american football thing

Also FIFA is no differnt from any normal business they like money money and hmm money so cant just hate them to hate them would be to hate all business, first thing a business does is look for profit :P
