so yeah, i'm way out of the loop. for the past two years i haven't used a computer for anything but email, and those computers sucked. but now i'm trying to get back into the swing of things and am in need of a new computer (my old blew up two weeks before i got home).

basically i'm opening this up for you computer gurus to discuss the perfect machine for me, yet staying within a reasonable price range. below are the things i'm going to need it for:

the givens - email and word processing
presentations, i.e. powerpoint
picture and video editing
sound mixing
casual/semi-serious gaming (i don't plan on getting in full on like before)

i know that many of you know exactly where i'm coming from. i'm going to college, so i don't have a lot of money or time, but i still want to have fun once in a while. i appreciate any help i can get. thank you.

yeah ... well i dunno, if he could put in another £50 he could do ok, sure he would be able to play the top games on full graphics :P, nor would he be able to multitask... but he would survive :)
so like, for 350pounds try something like this maybe:
monitor: (eww.. for that cheap ur gunna have to go for a CRT) £30
keyboard, mouse, speakers: £10
Case: £20-30
Motherboard: £60
Processor: £70
GFX: £70
RAM: £50 (1GB)
HDD: £35 (120-160GB space)
DVD Drive: £20
= £325
so i guess, that would be ok :) (if i forgot something slap me, im tired xD)

Anyway, back to topic.
What kindof amount of money are you looking to spend here?
Do you also need a new monitor+keyboard etc?

Scan.... They're pricey but trust worthy and do ready-built PC's for a certain budget. You can get some fairly nice stuff if your only looking for media attention, a bit of the old Word and the occasional bounce onto JK3.

I've built a few computers myself, and aided my dad in building them years ago back when i was younger. We're talking... I remember putting our first 3D FX in back when it was some kind of revolutionary invention. The likes of Turok and Quake would revel in the thought of it.

Evesham are good, but I didnt think they had particularly good customisation options, then again you may not want that. :)

If you're going to buy a computer online/pre-built, buy from Evesham.
They own. 2 years on site warranty, if you buy any new parts and want to put them in, they'll do it for you for free, and you'll keep your warranty.
..Not that I've bought with them before or anything. >.>

Ahh hey man ;) erm, For your G card I recommend perhaps hunting for a nvidia geforce 6800gt/gs, now they're old hat they can be picked up cheap but as I understand they still push the pixels damn well at half decent resolutions :)

I built my new computer just three days ago.
Few comments (of my opinion) based on the input so far:

-Do NOT EVER EVER EVER buy ebuyer.com extra value RAM.
-DDR2 RAM may be brand new, but isn't worth the extra cost. Performance difference is tiny.

-SATA hard drives are the way forward. The transfer rates are staggering.

-PCI-E motherboards will always have the edge over AGP (the two types of graphics card slot).
-I think Mindrith did already mention this briefly, but if you want a sexy AMD64 processor, socket 939 motherboards tend to be compatible with the whole series of AMDs, giving you a lot of space for upgrades.
-It's been said before, but yes, NVIDIA does own. ATIs can be a tad more reliable, but unless you're overclocking for that tiny bit extra power, it doesn't show at all. I got my NVIDIA7600GS (SLI ready) for just £87. (ebuyer.com = bargain)
-If you can, find out how much power your parts will be eating up before you pick a power supply. 350W is generally the lowest on the market for a reason. My graphics card requires a minimum of 350W, just as an example, so I'm cutting it pretty close by using the 350W supply which came with my new case.

All in all, I only spent around £350 on my new computer, though I am keeping my old monitor, keyboard+mouse, soundcard and software. Something like mine in the shops can be anything from £500 to £760 (with monitor etc removed, even).

*edit* Oh and yes, turning it on for the first time and seeing BIOS appear after putting the whole thing together with your bare hands in very rewarding indeed.

Welcome back ;)

Computers aint that badly priced lately, just hop down to your local computer shop and you'll be supprised how cheap they are now, i think it was the surge in people custom building pc's for so cheap that has driven the market down.
For what you need i wouldnt custom make one, i would buy a mid range one from a shop cheap enough .

OR. you can get the parts of ebuyer, and build it yourself :D, trust me, its easier than it sounds and its very rewarding ^_^
So,
1) the processor. definatly go for AMD, and only go for dual core if you going to be doing a lot of things at once (e.g. downloading, viedo encoding, jka and scanning for viruses at once). if not go for a good one (something thats definatly 64bit, and socket 939) (£200ish for dual core, £60ish for a normal)
2) motherboard. i advise not to skimp here, imo its the most important part :) you dont want this to hold up the rest of your wondeful machine. Make sure its compatible with all of your other components and i recomend ASUS. oh, also make sure it has a inbuilt soundcard and some USB drives :) (£60-90)
3) the memory. Go for DDR ram, and depending on the ammount of Ram slots your motherboard will have, go for anywhere between 1GB and 2GBs. (£50-£100)
4) GFX. defintaly go for nvidia! if your not going to be serious gamming, i would go for something like a 6 series geforce :) (£40-80) Remember, the higher in the series it is, the better :) and the ammount of memory it has also makes a pretty big difference :), (so, a 6800geforce with 256mb Vram will be better than a 6200geforce with 128Vram, but also more expensive.)
5) Monitor. go for a LCD i would, probably a 17" with decent refresh rate and good colour contrast (probs around 400:1) (or the other way round, cant remember how u write it lol :D)
6) make sure you case is big enough to fit everything in! I'd go for one with a power supply unit already installed, for the machine stated above, anywhere between a 350W and a 450W should suvice :). Also make sure its go enough fans to keep it cool :)
7) Then grab hold of windows and any of the programs you wish (bearing in mind youu CAN get pretty much anything for free these days, what with torrents etc. but I would still go for something thats real :) eventhough it will be expensive :()
then grab your keyboard, mouse, speakers etc and your home free!
just search google for computer building websites, but remember to ground youself :) (this takes away all the eletrical energy your body builds up, if you dont ground yourself you could destroy chips within the stuff, which would be bad :P) to ground yourself, just touch a radiator :D
hope this was usefull :)
-Mini :)
edit: it should be much cheaper to build them and buy the parts yourself btw. my computer cost £850ish and in a shop would have been £1200+ with iky screen :P.
