September the 11th is also the date I start my training as a police officer.

I do remember what year it was, but I have a very odd memory. I think its very natural for people close to traumatic events to forget details of them as a simple psychological coping mechanism.

I dunno. I think this is posted cause most people are plain surprised by the fact that so many people don't know what year it was.

Anyways. As blunt as it might sound, I'm actually glad people get all worked up at Sept. 11 cause my wife and I got together at Sept. 11 1998.
So I actually manage to remember our anniversary that way.
Too bad I had to think about the year when I was typing this though.

So basically, you're having a laugh at the memories of people over 55, who happen to live in America, at the expense of 3000 people killed on that day.

Charged statement much? :) That's unreasonable, I don't think anyone is being ridiculed.

Not really. Well, sort of. But not that harshly.

It's kinda interesting but at the same time it shows that pollsters are either running out of things to say or have a lot of free time or even both.

That is 100% correct. I honestly have no problem with Americans.

This poll does not prove anything. It was a terrible thing that happened. That we remember that it happened should be the point. I myself am terrible with dates and numbers. For example: some time in the 1940's we "stupid American's" dropped a NUCLEAR BOMB on Hiroshima and killed a whole lotta innocent people. I don't remember the date. I do know it happened and I hope it never happens again. That should be the point. Not when it happened but that it did happen and that it hopefully will not happen again.

lol if you asked me the year I doubt I would have known. And I live in NY! GO MEEE!!! hehe

Its not that I dont care. I know some families who lost people in the WTCs that day. I just dont focus on remembering the facts of that day. I know it took place and that it was one of the biggest tragedies I have ever experienced on hand. I just try not to think about it cause terrorists scare me. :(

95% of those who did not know where over the age of 55.

Hmm, my mom (42) can't even remember her own son's birthday when she fills out a form. Does it mean she doesn't care? No, it only means that off the top of her head she is really bad at recalling numbers.

This utterly useless poll doesn't show anything about anyone. Saying things like "Americans are stupid" is borderline racist and even though we've all been there at some point, we probably shouldn't base our prejudices on some dumb poll.

Well, before this thread turns flame, let me just say that this poll is at least an eye opener. To what? Not sure.

Objectively, I think that most humans, not just americans have a tendancy to try to take a disaster or tragedy that they have lived through, learn what they can from it, and go on.

I know I personally do this. I have been through a lot of things negative in my life that I feel has shaped and formed me into who I am today. I can't place an exact date on it nor can I tell you to what level of desperation I was at during it. I remember it was bad and I remember what I learned from it.

You have to GO ON WITH LIFE. Does that mean that we should forget something as simple as "in 2001 a large scale attack was carried out resulting in 3000 people being needlessly killed?"

Probably not, but I certainly understand the human condition that focuses on the present and not dwelling in the past. But as an American and a Human Being, I will never forget the events of 9-11-2001.

I'm not really sure of your intention when posting this but if it makes you feel good, take a go at us Americans when ever you want. I do ask that you display a little sensitivity when choosing your subject. 9/11 was not a happy day. It should not be a punch line. I lost a friend on flight 175 out of Boston that day and I don't need a post on the JA forums to remind me.

Thank you.

What it shows is that old people forget since 95% of those who didn't know it off the top of their heads were over the age of 55. And I would bet that if you told them the date after they didn't know it they would have remembered and felt like they did actually know it and it slipped their mind.

I hate how we have to remember anniversaries of events such as these. As disresupectful as it sounds, I'd rather not have to remind myself of it just because it's a certain measurement of time since it happened.

As for the poll, what does it prove?

This memory black hole is essentially the problem of the older crowd: 48 percent of those who did not know were between the ages of 55 and 64, and 47 percent were older than 65, according to the poll.

The Post telephone survey was carried out July 21-24 among 1,002 randomly selected adults. The margin of error is plus or minus three percentage points.
