An Expanding Universe - but who is interested? **The EU Thread**

Post your views on anything relating to the Star Wars EU here. Books, games, tv, graphic novels/comics, etc. C'mon there's gotta be a few of us here who are interested in this kinda thing! ;)

Quote:
No idea if a thread similar to this has been done before, but thought i would create it anyway.

I was writing a question in Aiddats Star Wars Quiz thread, and it made me wonder just who here at TJA, were interested in the constantly expanding universe of star wars (the EU), and to what extent?

I am sure some here are not interested at all, and others just enjoy the films, however i am equally sure we have other members who enjoy reading the odd star wars book, or are big fans of games like KotOR (even JK is based on EU material).

Personally i think the EU constitutes the future of the franchise now that the PT is over, and i hope LA & LF realise or have realised this, and work to make it (or elements of it) more mainstream, in order to garner more support from people who have perhaps in the past avoided it.

So who agrees with me that the EU is a good thing, and possibly represents the future of star wars, and who thinks its a load of rubbish? And if you have no opinion either way please say so, and i could stick up some good links so you could get an idea of what i am waffling about. :P

Right.

R2: Yeah I keep meaning to read Outbound Flight, i've read all the other stories connected to it. Survivors quest was alright, and I heard it was quite good.

Yeah, while different, I felt the NJO worked. It had flaws, but it told an awesome tale unlike any before it. The ending as you say, was fitting. Whoop for Lando!

Yeah I love the Han Solo trilogy, i think its one of the best in the Bantam series. The X-Wing novels are great too.

I've only read Tales from the Empire, but it was pretty good.

Falor: Yeah I like that one, partly because its quite unlike a lot of the others in certain ways. Its interesting to note that it was released with similar media build up to the upcoming Force Unleashed thing, big projects covering: games, books, and other tie ins.

Qin: Aye i'm enjoying the LotF series too, only SW books i'm really reading at the moment. Although i'm following Legacy and KotOR graphic novels too. Sacrifice was well done in my opinion, although the top three so far for me are: Exile, Betrayal, Inferno.

R2: Yes I had noticed that, a nice nod, one of many from the DH team. :)

Falor: I even liked the Mando parts  Although I admit they could be condensed more considering the size of the novel. Mara was the most in character she's been in a fair while, at least spy wise. Ben was great in that book, although its excruciating that Mara/Ben havn't shared things with Luke. I would correct you though, Inferno draws that line ;)

Lewis: There is going to be at least one live action television series as well, but I agree the EU is important to keeping SW going.

House: Depends what time period you are interested in? For PT stuff there are some good PT novels out there, Dark Rendevouz, Shatterpoint, Cloak of Deception... There are some good graphic novels set then too.

OT wise its best to start with the Thrawn Trilogy, and then move ahead where appopriate, the X-Wing series is great if you like action, underused characters, and the comraderies and quick wit of SW. Then there is the NJO another good jump on point, but quite a haul of books (19). Other than that you could start at The Dark Nest, and from there read Legacy of the Force.

If you like The Old Republic stuff like KotOR, then there are a couple of Darth Bane novels and an excellent graphic novel series by Dark Horse called simply: Knights of the Old Republic.

Lone: Yep, myself and a few others follow it. I'm a fan, although its a controversial series to some. Personally I feel its been well executed.

Dart: Indeed you are correct, that was the first.

Tsaun: Good sentiments, I agree. :)

DJ: Yep Supershadow is generally just full of lies, I wouldn't trust info from there bud.

As to a series set in the future, I believe he has said that if the TV series set in the Dark Times is a success other series will be considered in other time periods. He mentioned the KotOR period and the Future periods.

Artex: Not Luke, at least not primarily. They are making a live action series set in the Dark Times between Episodes III and IV. It will almost certainly include Boba Fett among other lesser known characters with cameos from the more well known actors/characters possible. For Farscape fans: Wayne 'Scorpius' Pygram is in line to play Tarkin

g'day!

I thought as much, as why would plots be posted online and they were bad plots.

But, why won't Lucas make an EU movie or series? The story arcs are already there, with a readership of millions. Or is he concentrating on the time between the trilogies to leave the EU open for a later series? Maybe a Thrawn trilogy?

So far, I've read through the Dark Nest trilogy. Maybe all the brain candy has numbed some synapses, so I think I'll take a break from the EU and fiction in general.;)

I was on www.SuperShadow.com and there's an ongoing interview where George Lucas refers to the EU books and the games as "false", but justifies them only for the income stream it provides Lucas.

There are plot synopses of Episodes 7, 8, and 9, that run absolutely counter to the EU, i.e. legions of Dark Jedi wearing jet packs and Darth Vader armor and masks, the Jedi Academy is on Bespin, the Dark Side comes from a geographical part of the galaxy, "The Yuuzhan Vong are not real at all", and so on. He says he has borrowed the character, Mara Jade, from Timothy Zahn, but the history he's plotting will render most of the EU moot.

To me the EU is an endless resource of Star Wars literature i guess. There are loads and loads of different authors with different styles who write based on George Lucas' imagination and turn it into their own interesting and innovative stories all interwoven into the complete Star Wars saga, which is still expanding. That to me is amazing and i never get bored of a good Star Wars comic or book! The best thing i reckon is the fact that all of the hundreds of stories dont even contradict eachover (i think ;))
The EU has always existed and excited ever since the first film as different authors have joined the fray to make Star Wars more than a Science Fiction Movie :alliance:

Well it's the EU thread, so I figure this is as good a place as any to ask. I've never really dug too much into the EU. I've read The Truce at Bakura, and a couple of comics, but not much. So, I was wondering of anyone has any advice as to where I should start. I know there is a lot to read, and I just have no idea where to begin. Any and all advice would rock, thanks.

I'd start at Heir to Empire. Most of the stuff in the post-ROTJ EU is established in it and its two sequels, like the introduction of Mara Jade, Thrawn, Pellaeon, etc. as well as the trilogy where the Solo Twins are born.

Splinters of the Minds Eye was the first EU book, but it wasn't well known. The EU really picked up with 1991's Heir to the Empire.

Technically, no. The first EU novel was Splinter of the Mind's Eye in 1978--a bit before Heir to the Empire's 1992, no?

Legacy of the Force is a pretty good series, didn't know if anyone else followed it. I've read them up until the 5th one which is the latest of the 9 book total.

Summary is: galaxy trying to recover from the Vong war, collapse or re-organized new republic into the GA Galactic Alliance. Ends up with Jacen Solo turning into the New Sith Lord. Then Fett and the Mando's coming back into the scene with some mean looking assault fighters.

I think from a release date the first EU novels where the Thrawn Trilogy starting with Heir to the Empire, many consider this to be the best books written and Thrawn is one of the better new Characters.

If you want to move away from Luke han and Leia then I would recommend getting the X-wing novels especially if you get the old games to help you understand the dog fights :)

Happy Reading

Tales From Jabba's Palace was nice. The stories centered around the events at the beginning of ROTJ, so the reader gets to learn about the minor characters we see in Jabba's palace.

Also read Tales from the New Republic. A nice assortment of tales, focused on other individuals in the Star Wars universe, not any of the main characters. There was a nice short story concerning Senator Bel Iblis and Hal Horn by Stackpole and Zahn that was included with Tales from the New Republic.

I currently am reading Tales from the Empire. I bought Tales of the Bounty Hunters and the first book of the Dark Nest trilogy. Turns out my local bookstore misplaced the other 2 books of the Dark Nest trilogy, so I may have to wait on that

I've read a good bit of Star Wars books this summer heh.

First, I finished NJO. Traitor was one of my favorites. The ending with all of the old school EU/movie characters was quite fitting.

Second, I read Zahn's Survivor's Quest and Outbound Flight. I always wondered about Outbound Flight and finally we get the story to it, along with a better understanding of the Chiss.

Third, I read through The Han Solo Trilogy that takes place right before ANH. Provides some nice development of Han Solo's character that we see in ANH. He even gets involved with the rebellion for a little bit. The books go into detail concerning Hutts, which I found kind of interesting. The trilogy sheds some light on Han's disgust towards slavery, Chewie's life debt to Han, Solo's various smuggler friends including Lando, and finally the sabaac game where Han won the Falcon from Lando. Near the end of the trilogy is Han's Kessel Run, explaining the Run and why Han refers to his record in parsecs heh. The trilogy touches on the spice run that leads to Han's bounty by Jabba. The ending of the book is Han's introduction in the original trilogy.

Fourth, I've started reading some of the anthologies. Today, I finished the Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina. Almost all of the tales center on one of the characters present in the Mos Eisley Cantina scene in ANH. Most of the characters witness Obi-Wan's lightsaber action or Greedo's failed attempt to collect the bounty on Han. I found it interesting how these two scenes that we know of from the movies are viewed from various perspectives. The Tales contain several references to the Rebellion and the oppression of the Empire. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the tales.

Currently, I'm reading Tales from Jabba's Palace.
I'm thinking about purchasing the Dark Nest Trilogy and reading it sometime soon.

Timothy Zahn is great. I started reading EU way back when Thrawn trilogy came out. I've been addicted ever since.
I try to read everything in chronological order.
Most of the NJO series was pretty good. Star by Star is by far the greates of that series (the one where someone important dies) I won't give it away.
I also liked the Dark nest, and sofar, I'm loving the LotF series. ( I'm half-way through Exile)

I really enjoy all things Star Wars, when it comes to novels.
Oh, and DrunkenJedi, Kyle is not a very prominent character in most of the novels, but it is neat when they refer to him, from time to time.

No problem DJ. :)

Yeah i really enjoyed the NJO series too, its not for everyone's taste and if you look into it in depth continuity errors appear. However overall its a fantastic team effort with an interesting and well executed concept.

Indeed there is a lot of choice in what you read and when with Star Wars. While i do recommend you read the Dark Nest and LotF, be aware that the LotF series does not end until next year anyway, so you would do just as well to continue catching up if you are serious about garnering a wide knowledge.

Recently i read LotF: Exile. Its probably the best book of the series so far in my opinion. Allston does a great job of characterising everyone as they should be, and in some cases retconning some iffy characterisations from the previous two books.

The content could be considered filler for the next book (Sacrifice) which is set to be very important as it shows Jacen's acceptance of a Sith name, and potential sacrifice of a well known character. Some people even think it will be Luke Skywalker. However i was actually very satisfied with the events of this book, particularly Ben Skywalkers adventure, i felt this worked really well and made me much more interested in who he is.

Thank you, NewbieD'Kana! You seem to have extensive knowledge on this subject. I have to start looking for these comics.

So here's where I am now....

I've been mired in the NJO series, and I must say I'm absolutely enjoying my time there. I sort of wish, however, that I maintained continuity with the previous novels I've read, as the NJO series references events portrayed in several earlier books. But this is a minor quibble.

I jumped ahead because I wanted to read about Kyle Katarn, but so far he's been mentioned only once, and only towards the end of the series, which I have read in order, book by book, to where I am now, only 2 1/2 books shy of the end. I won't spoil anyone's enjoyment of the NJO series by reviewing or describing or summarizing the events. I can only recommend, if you haven't read this series, that you read them, from beginning to end. This is an epic tale of galactic war, death, destruction, hope, love, and honor that is told with skill and aplomb by many authors, with astute editorial direction and attention to continuity over the entire span of the story arc.

When I'm finished, I'm going back, to Prequel era, and read chronologically, including the comics and Dark Forces books, up to the NJO, which I may read again, and then the Dark Nest Trilogy and the Legacy of the Force. Or, I may continue directly to these newest books.:D
