Well, you had to know this was going to happen somewhere at sometime.
And it did last Friday in Phoenix, Arizona.

Pranksters had a stunning surprise for theatregoers who went to see the summer popcorn flick "Snakes on a Plane."

Someone apparently snuck in a real serpent and let it loose in the building. No one was hurt by the stupid stunt but it could have been serious - the viper they found slithering around the cinema was a rattlesnake.

It was one of two officials actually tracked down in and around the AMC Desert Ridge. "One was found in the parking lot during the show, and the other in the movie theatre," explains spokesperson Melanie Bell. "They were both removed, and no one was harmed."

She insists that contrary to initial reports, there was no panic and that patrons were evacuated before the serpent came in contact with anyone. Authorities believe the creature was smuggled inside in a backpack before being turned loose.

The movie has become something of a legend because of its title. It stars Samuel L. Jackson and centres on a crate load of snakes that escape during a flight, causing havoc on board a commercial airplane.

But while the flick may be steeped in lore, the incident wasn't. Those in the know say it could have been very dangerous.

"There were kids at the show, and it was actually very reckless," explains Russ Johnson of the Phoenix Herpetological Society. "The snakes' bite carries a powerful venom that could have seriously injured someone."

The snakes were eventually released into the desert and in the great tradition of the industry, the show must - and did - go on.

Sorry but this already got debunked. The truth is that the rattlesnakes were in the vicinity of the theater. One of them was in the parking lot. No prank.

i only goto the cinema for adults here, where you can order scotch and cokes at regular intervals and the chairs are big leather armchair types. It keeps all the stupid school kids out.

On one of the WoW forums somebody wrote that he and his friends went drunk and brought a bunch of rubber snakes to throw.

Now I hate people who behave disruptively at movie theaters, and I hate theaters that refuse to throw such jerks out. Nonetheless I laughed pretty hard when I read about the rubber snakes thing. Cruel, yet brilliant--wait until one of the suspenseful scenes, when audience members are really engrossed in the story, then *plop* a big rubber snake lands in your lap.

I thought it would have been better, though, to walk the parking lot and find an unlocked car, then put a bunch of rubber snakes in the driver's seat. Waiting nearby with a camcorder would make for an instant youtube classic. Of course, the subject would probably have beaten the pranksters to a bloody pulp, but this too would have been a youtube classic.
