Or when you buy your next game you could possible have spyware!
As Electronic Arts says, "It's in the game" GAMES PUBLISHERS like in-game advertising, but Electronic Arts may have one too far with its latest endeavour. A Computer Gaming World podcast reveals how retail packages of Battlefield 2142 come with a blurb to inform the buyer that the game comes with monitoring software that will be tracking your online activities. "When you use the software while connected to the Internet, the advertising technology may record your IP address and other anonymous information," the packaging states. The technology then delivers adverts that may correspond to your tastes, depending on what the spyware learns about you. "The advertising technology does not collect personal or identifiable information about you," it says. This, however, will depend on what you get up to online, of course. Several game-related sites have their readers up in arms over this piece of paper, and many say they have cancelled their pre-orders of the game. Publishers should perhaps ask themselves why over 15 million gamers are playing MMORPGs and are not interested paying for games in which they play guinea pigs for marketing companies. Source I think besides the other avenues such as: Email Spam Adware Spyware Constant television advertisements (5 minutes) Constant Radio advertisements -------^ And so on.... It gets more pathetic every day all this marketing and advertising and some times makes me want to kill the company responsible. What say you, savy? -Zeke. |

Allow me to elaborate.
I was aware of this before I bought the game. I bought the game the day it came out. I don't care. The billboards in the game are all related to the storyline of the game itself, advertising for armies, weapons etc. It's something a little different really. The billboards do not advertise real products or real companies. The 'spyware' included in the game monitors how long you're looking at the billboards for, and as mentioned before, your ip address to determine what language your advertisements should be in. It is only active while you're playing, and doesn't monitor anything else. There are no problems in my opinion, with BF2142. _______________ -Kauyon Draconis [Official master of Ataris] This comment was edited by Esta on Nov 19 2006 11:50pm. |

I don't care, I read carefully the terms and conditions before installing 2142, and the only thing they monitor is which in-game signage areas I see, and my IP address (to tell which country I'm in to deliver relevant adverts).
At the moment, I've not noticed anything but the default "EU Needs You"-style example boards in-game and I've already racked up over 50 hours. _______________ Website |
