so if I were in an argument with a person and for some reason said "my god you are completely full of Sh**. How anyone as stupid as you is able to breathe is completely amazing you f**king idiot," they could go out and press charges against me claiming that what I said alarmed them and they are now distressed.

[4A Intentional harassment, alarm or distress]

[(1) A person is guilty of an offence if, with intent to cause a person harassment, alarm or distress, he—

(a) uses threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, or disorderly behaviour, or

(b) displays any writing, sign or other visible representation which is threatening, abusive or insulting,

thereby causing that or another person harassment, alarm or distress.

It is an offence regardless of the racial element, however a racially aggravacted contravention of the above offence is treated as a more serious offence. The only legislation we have in the UK protecting free speech is the human rights act 1998. However in my opinion if you are distressing people by using insulting language and behaviour, you are infringing that persons human rights. Even if this richards guy had a right to say what he did, should he have a right to cause other people distress or alarm? Not in my opinion. If you disagree thats an interesting point of view which I can accept, but one I dont think I could ever share ;)

Hmmm. Put it this way, if he had done it on my watch in the UK i would have arrested him and taken great pride in it. I dont know whether you have any laws that prevent this kind of behaviour in the US but we do in the UK. (If anyones interested I'm referring to racially aggravated contravention of section 4a of the Public Order Act 1986). So from my point of view what he did is not only grossly immoral but should be illegal, and definitely would be in the uk. At the very least the guys career should be over, racist idiots like him should have no place in society let alone in the public eye.

So much for freedom of speech in England. Hate crime laws are some of the biggest pieces of garbage in the world. No matter how stupid racist or sexist the things you say are, you shouldn't be going to jail for it. About the only time I can think where you could is if you are inciting people to riot. And then the crime is inciting a riot not, speaking the thoughts in your head. A man shouldn't go to jail just because he said something you feel is offensive.

I saw the hecklers playing the victim card on Hannity & Colmes. They had their attorney with them, had pretty obviously been coached not to be as obnoxious as they were in the club and are looking to play this for big bucks. In their version of the story the only thing they did was that they came in late and were "a little loud" ordering their drinks, and Richards then started in on them. Forgive me if I'm skeptical. These guys are just oportunists, and what's going to be lost here is that this really is a free speech issue. What Richards said was despicable, but if somebody can be sued if somebody is offended by what he says, then the First Amendment has just been repealed.

One of them actually said he felt threatened by Richards. I laughed so hard I almost fell out of my chair. The only one who felt threatened in that club was Richards when he realized that the entire audience, whites and blacks alike, wanted to kill him. But the victim card plays well in the media, and these guys are looking to cash in.

I'd respect them a lot more if they had just said, "Yeah we were acting like jerks, and we're sorry, but we didn't scream racial epithets at anybody or do anything hateful like Richards did." That would be taking the high road but wouldn't play as well when they file their lawsuit.

just saw both clips... pretty much agreed with buzz's first post. his apology on letterman seemed sincere albeit a little side tracked when he started going on about hurricane katrina or some jazz, linking to javaguys first paragraph. that said, i think sean hannity's a total <beep>. i dont think al sharpton ever 'prohibited' non-whites from watching letterman either, it just seems like a show more whites than blacks would be into - huge generalisation, i know.

all in all i think richards acted like a dumbass and just about killed what was left of his career.

and btw, 'wow' is about all i can say to ash's video.

Well, there is the possibility that he simply enjoyed his job as a standup. And yes, he should have made enough money from Seinfeld to have been able to have retired quite comfortably. It's also possible that, instead of just spending his money on normal people things that he also spent it on nice, expensive things too, which means that he either doesn't have enough money to live off of or he'd like to maintain his old standard of living as much as possible. That's my reasoning anyway.

I thought seinfeld only did a couple of shows, my mistake. Don't know why Richards bothers is my point, he should have gotten enough money from Seinfeld to live happily ever after.

Jerry Seinfeld hasn't called it a night though. He's no longer doing sitcoms but he is back to doing standup regularly.

I think Richard's has killed the rest of his career. He was having no luck on tv, and from what I've heard his standup isn't that funny either. It may have worked back in 1979 when he started but that was the last time he had to do it. And if you can't evolve your act some you're dead

imo he seemed to want to change the subject away from what he did and avoid fully explaining what he said in the club.

I don't think he has yet or will ever do anything coming close to seinfeld ever again, should have just called it a night like jerry seinfeld. He has enough money or should do.

Sean Hannity remarked this evening what a wierd guy Richards is. He noted that when any other celebrity gets in trouble and needs to appologize, he writes his appology in advance, possibly with the help of an image consultant, edits and polishes it until it's exactly what he wants to say and then memorizes it so he can deliver it word-for-word. Richards' appology was obviously completely ad-lib. The candor is nice, but doing that is really just another chance to get in even worse trouble.

Al Sharpton has complained that he delivered his appology on a "white TV show," although I don't know where Sharpton thinks he gets the authority to prohibit non-whites from watching it. He went on to say that his appology should be rejected. Some people think that Richards' career should just be over, and I'm not sure they're wrong, but it's funny that Sharpton's and Jesse Jackson's careers were not derailed by their own racist and antisemitic tirades. We've got an actual former Klansman in Congress, but Sharpton doesn't mind because the Klansman in question is a democrat.

Its always going to get that registered requirement because it gets pretty offensive. So you might need to look on another website for it or someone who knows how to link from youtube so it shows up on their website to view.

My take on it was pretty much what Buzz said, but no, it doesn't excuse it. The hecklers were rude and obnoxious, but a lot of comedians deal with rude audience members without sinking to their level.

If he'd just made the remark about "fifty years ago..." and then not said anything else about it, he'd have done fine.

Something I do find amusing: Just try to imagine all the groups who said they were so offended applying a similar standard to, say, Jesse Jackson. /rolleyes

i don't think he has the years of racial oppression behind him required to do racial stand up. (nor the correct presentation)

I belive something similar. The clip itself starts suspiciosly abrupt with Richardson screaming at these guys. And he has been around Holywood before, he is not a moron when it comes to what career suicide is. That is why I think he just plain lost it. They mocked him to a point where he lost his grip and went after them with the worst thing he could think of. Was he excused by this? Nope. It still was a stupid thing to do. But I highly doubt the sole blame lies on him.

Now I think its obvious that what happened was the guys were being loud and rude. And he attempted to deal with them. And tried to be funny by skirting that line of comedy and being racially insensitive. It obvious he doesn’t have the ability that a lot of other comedians do have, be they white black or hispanic. He screwed up and proceeded to throw a big old temper tantrum that made the audience pissed and walk out on him.
