Hey guys!

Kenyon here. I'm busy playing Freelancer again. For those who don't know, it's basically an action game where you pilot a ship through a pretty big universe, do missions, earn credits, buy a new ship with those credits, enter new territories, etcetera.

There's also a multiplayer aspect to it - the same huge galaxy, without the single player storyline but otherwise same functionality. When you log off, your ship, equipment and credits get saved to the server. It's almost a bit like a MMORPG, but it's possible to put your own server up.

There's a few good total conversion mods around for Freelancer, and several of them are Star Wars total conversions.

I know that some of you play this game as well. Would it be an idea to get a server up and play together?

Thats because the game doesn't end there; the main-quest does.

The mod certainly sounds great, and if finished could even be the perfect way of experiening squadron style gameplay (X-Wing/TIE series is looking dated, and Rogue Squadron isn't good enough frankly), i'd certainly be interested in dusting off my copy of the game if enough people were interested.

I've been playing around with the Star Wars modification a bit on my private server. It's definitely still a 'beta' release, but it has some unique features that the Freelancer original doesn't have.

The travel method is different - you basically have three modes. One is 'combat' mode - the close range kind. It'll take hours before you even reach a planet, but it's the best one to take for dogfights. The 'cruise' mode - it'll boost up to quite some speeds which makes it great for travel within a system, to planets or outposts or even Star Destroyers, where you can then dock. And finally, Hyperspace, which can get you from one system to another. The effect is very much like in the movies. You use buoys to navigate.

Another great feature of this modification is the ability to control carriers - yes, you can fly your very own star destroyer, but it has to be assigned to you by a server admin, because you can't just buy one in the shops. A destroyer has amazing firepower, but it's so slow that hitting those pesky X-Wings is incredibly hard. They also have amazing armour, though - so the only way to take them out is Squadron style.

This is basically the formula for a Star Wars battle - a squadron taking out a capital ship. The concept is great, but the mod is not quite finished yet.

Got this game round about when it came out, its fantastic, really immersive. I've never tried the multiplayer, but i've long been curious as to what its like, particularly when i read about the star wars mods out for it.

I dunno, I bought it when it originally shipped. I'm pretty sure it's still widely available though, the game is not that old.

One of the great things about it is that the space is truly interactive: you can actually orbit a planet and often land on it, and it grows from a very small sphere in the background to a huge planetoid. You can even get close to a sun and be blinded by the light, but get too close and you'll burn a fiery death. You can fly into nebulea while dodging asteroids, etcetera.

The whole Star Wars RP mod for the multiplayer game sounds like an exciting thing, by the way. I'm sure many of us would be excited to play an Imperial or Rebel pilot and engage in squadron-based play to kick arse.

I went to buy it today at EB Games but they said it had been recalled. The lady said it was re-released in new packaging but was recalled, she seemed to think it was something to do with the packaging, I'll keep looking.???

Wow that looks nice I might have to look at getting that, I've been looking for a Star Wars Flying game, but the X Wing/Tie Fighter games are getting a bit old.
