Knights of the Old Republic MMORPG? | |

Got this rumor from Wikipedia: Quote: On April 25th, 2007, a rumor came about that BioWare was secretly in development on a Knights of the Old Republic MMORPG. Stemming from the latest issue of EGM, the rumor contained little information to support the claim. However, investigation into the matter reveals that there is more to the rumor than EGM's single suggestion. In early 2006 BioWare opened an Austin branch to develop an unnamed MMORPG. This alone confirmed an inevitable BioWare MMO, but the choice of Richard Vogel as a leader of the project is what largely suggest that the currently unnamed MMO is set in the KOTOR universe. Vogel was one of the project leaders behind the sci-fi MMO Star Wars Galaxies. SWG was held down by being set in a universe where continuity prevented any true story development (such as seen in WoW) and SOE assuming creative control eventually caused the removal of the things that had kept SWG's hardcore fanbase playing among them the skill tree system, which allowed for more customizable characters and drastic changes to the game's combat and character profession selection.
SOE has been confirmed to have lost the Star Wars license, though there has been no confirmation that BioWare will be producing a KotOR MMORPG. This post was edited by Kenyon on Mar 23 2011 05:48pm. |

Quote: I think KotOR 1's story had more polish to it, and was perhaps a better straight story. However TSL was fantastically complex and had a lot of depth. I liked the way it tied things together and left room for a great final act.
Which then promptly never came. If by complex and full of depth, you mean plotholes. Then you are correct. |

Don't know what to think about that. Could be Karpyshyn is not involved with the project? That's what I'm hoping. Yeah at the most this means Bioware are not involved with a new KotOR game. However it would not be the first time someone at Bioware has denied knowledge of something that exists because they can't talk about it yet. LA should really get Obsidian to do it again. They did a good job with TSL, and if anything the story was richer than the first (just without that twist). The main problem with that game was that they had to rush it out, and they have less on their plate right now than Bioware (Dragon Age, Mass Effect series, unamed MMO... etc). _______________ To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield | Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken | Rhaiko D'kana - SWTOR EU Guild Co-Founder | Is it what the teacher, teaches? Just this one I found a while back:
Latest update from 1up.com Quote: "Today, a tipster contacted 1UP with portions of a script for what was said to be a "Star Wars online" game. The script's description of the game reads: "This is a role-playing game set in the historical past of the Star Wars universe. Jedi and Sith battle across the galaxy with the power of the Force and are joined by soldiers, politicians and nobles. Players must choose the destinies of heroes and villains in a thrilling and dangerous universe." Historical past? Jedi and Sith battling across the galaxy? To we Star Wars nerds, that sounds quite a bit like the "Old Republic" timeline, which BioWare Senior Writer Drew Karpyshyn helped flesh out with the KOTOR series and by penning the Darth Bane novels. The script goes on to show an exchange between the player and a character named Fuse, a naive bomb designer. The portions of the script that we received are fairly heavy with dialog, which isn't typical for an MMORPG, but it does read very much like a script to a KOTOR game. This could mean that the two projects are still separate. On the other hand, the game was described to the tipster as an MMO, and "heavy dialog" is practically BioWare's calling card." All seems a bit unclear, but further suggest some kind of KotOR game is in the works. Dialogue heavy dosn't sound like an MMORPG though, so maybe we'll get lucky and its a confusion of two projects, or the next KotOR game includes online features. This on top of the fact they almost made a KotOR game instead of TFU and also that the Darth Bane novels have been selling well suggests to me that a game will come sooner than later. Perhaps after TFU is out of the way. I just wish they'd give some kind of clarification either way. _______________ To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield | Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken | Rhaiko D'kana - SWTOR EU Guild Co-Founder | Is it what the teacher, teaches? Update: That art was from the scrapped game they were working on in 2004. After the corporate reshuffle at LA they focused on TFU and the new Indy game. The silver lining to this news is that they obviously have/had ideas for a KotOR III and with the obvious demand for the series they might go back to that after the TFU hype has died down.
What gets me is the best way to make KotOR III is to hire Bioware or Obsidian to make it, which would take a lot less of LA's internal time. They could be working on two smash hits right now instead of one might-be smash hit. Its crazy. _______________ To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield | Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken | Rhaiko D'kana - SWTOR EU Guild Co-Founder | Is it what the teacher, teaches? Not to get anyone excited again for no reason but I found this on theforce.net. Basically some concept artwork (by Lucasarts employee James Zhang) has leaked online under the title of 'Knights of the Old Republic III'.
As can be seen here some of it looks pretty classy, and very KotOR-y. I'm not getting my hopes up as it could be an old scapped game theoretically (but why scrap one of your biggest cash cows?) but this could mean we are getting closer towards an official reveal at some point in the future. The first thing revealed about The Force Unleashed for example was: Concept Art. _______________ To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield | Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken | Rhaiko D'kana - SWTOR EU Guild Co-Founder | Is it what the teacher, teaches? So its offical, the MMO being created by Bioware is a lucasarts title but, it is NOT a KOTOR related game
this IGN article _______________ Come on now, every Generation X boy wanted to be Luke Skywalker. Is it because he was a whiney farm boy from some backwater hack planet? No, it's because he was a FREAKING JEDI. He could block lasers with his lightsaber. He could levitate droids & rocks & crap with his mind. Come on, he choked two pig dudes with just a simple gesture. He cut off Darth Vader's hand and kicked him down a flight of stairs. He got his @$$ zapped by lightning from the geezer Emperor, stood up and said "s'at all you got b!tc#??" Even more interestingly it is considered a seperate project to the MMO Bioware and Lucasarts are apparently working on. Thank god... My thoughts exactly. Although I should make it clear that all the list shows is 'KotOR' so it could be an MMO but only if Bioware are making two. Which would be insane. _______________ To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield | Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken | Rhaiko D'kana - SWTOR EU Guild Co-Founder | Is it what the teacher, teaches? The first real kind of official confirmation that KotOR 3 is being made has arrived!
In an article on Kotaku here they point out that on EA's latest analyst report 'KotOR' is listed under development by Bioware. Even more interestingly it is considered a seperate project to the MMO Bioware and Lucasarts are apparently working on. a portion of the analyst report can be found here. Kotaku are trying to get further confirmation, but this has revitilised my hopes that we will see out Revan's story and in the proper fashion. _______________ To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield | Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken | Rhaiko D'kana - SWTOR EU Guild Co-Founder | Is it what the teacher, teaches?
