Knights of the Old Republic MMORPG? | |

Got this rumor from Wikipedia: Quote: On April 25th, 2007, a rumor came about that BioWare was secretly in development on a Knights of the Old Republic MMORPG. Stemming from the latest issue of EGM, the rumor contained little information to support the claim. However, investigation into the matter reveals that there is more to the rumor than EGM's single suggestion. In early 2006 BioWare opened an Austin branch to develop an unnamed MMORPG. This alone confirmed an inevitable BioWare MMO, but the choice of Richard Vogel as a leader of the project is what largely suggest that the currently unnamed MMO is set in the KOTOR universe. Vogel was one of the project leaders behind the sci-fi MMO Star Wars Galaxies. SWG was held down by being set in a universe where continuity prevented any true story development (such as seen in WoW) and SOE assuming creative control eventually caused the removal of the things that had kept SWG's hardcore fanbase playing among them the skill tree system, which allowed for more customizable characters and drastic changes to the game's combat and character profession selection.
SOE has been confirmed to have lost the Star Wars license, though there has been no confirmation that BioWare will be producing a KotOR MMORPG. This post was edited by Kenyon on Mar 23 2011 05:48pm. |

I don't think so, EA is only going to distribute, they are still have the same designers/programers/creative staff so nothing should change. That doesn't mean anything. In the end any future Star Wars game made by Bioware pretty much comes down to their Dev team and LA.
If the dev team at Bioware is for some reason depleted (I cannot see this happening for a long time with the rep the've got, regardless of the owner) then they could bring out an unpolished game, and of course there is the worry LA will make big mistakes like they did with KotOR II among others. However LA have published some classic games, some recently (KotOR, Lego SW, Rep Comm etc.) they can be very patchy in terms of decision making - I think this is a big wait and see situation - there are too many unknowns at this point. Such as whether its even a Star Wars game. Personally, regardless of whether this is set in the KotOR 'era', I can see LA at some point going ahead with a KotOR III. The series has been exceptionally popular so far, and with the sucess of Biowares own Mass Effect they will see that it is a sellable commoditiy. Hell the lead writer at Bioware is writing popular KotOR era Star Wars books at the moment, they know they can sell the stuff. _______________ To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield | Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken | Rhaiko D'kana - SWTOR EU Guild Co-Founder | Is it what the teacher, teaches? Besides in my opinion both the kotors rocked. the second kinda sucked in some places but I dont complain. I usually just scare the crap out of everyone when I play. I love looking at peoples reactions. |

Biowares new game mass effect ( Try it) is evidence that they have other things on their mind.I wouldnt mind the Idea of this though. It would be awesome |

Anything Bioware develops, EA has the final say in. If Lucasarts is co-developing or something, then maybe EA won't be able to do much about it. _______________ "Deos fortioribus adesse." |

EA is widely criticized for being the downfall of popular companies (Westwood and Bullfrog for example) and Bioware is no different from those companies if you really look at it.
Some companies (Bullfrog) actually reached their peek while under EA. Yet, many devs from said companies have a few choice words regarding EA . Just because EA isn't changing Bioware doesn't mean Bioware won't change. There is a very good chance (looking at EA's history with acquired companies) that changes will take place in the near future. Real thing to worry about is how it will change. On a lighter note, the console wars does offer a buffer in that area. Even though EA has Bioware, Microsoft wouldn't want anything to happen to the developer of a game that is the selling point for many 360 owners. Personally, I'm just hoping EA might give a little bit of a push for Bioware to get the PC ports sooner. _______________ "Deos fortioribus adesse." Lets not be pessimistic panakas, if any independant developer can survive being owned by a larger company its Bioware. Their reputation is sometimes not fully appreciated - they are respected everyone from the games industry to the film industry. Hell I even see their name pop up in regards to creative writing.
EA have made mistakes in the past, but i'm thinking they won't dissolve the essence of Bioware. The worst i'm expecting is KotOR 2 syndrome - where a game is rushed out early to meet the publishers demands. As Jade said its not as if the creative staff has changed. _______________ To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield | Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken | Rhaiko D'kana - SWTOR EU Guild Co-Founder | Is it what the teacher, teaches? Yes but the question is: Can Bioware, who is now owned by EA, make a well polished, good game? The answer is probably not. |

Quote: I can't really see anything that hasn't already been said... Does seem likely it will be Star Wars though. Now we await the anouncement. The way they describe the project as being a "ground breaking Interactive Entertainment Product" would suggest an MMO(RPG), however after the Force Unleashed's huge media circus it could still potentially be KotOR 3. I'd love either, but my moneys on an MMO after all the other rumours and news. Needless to say if BIOWARE ever make a star wars MMO I will buy it instantly. If they ever make a KOTOR era star wars MMO, I will... erm, buy it more instantly? _______________ To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield | Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken | Rhaiko D'kana - SWTOR EU Guild Co-Founder | Is it what the teacher, teaches?
