So I really want to get into photography and I've been surfing around the internet for info, pictures etc., but I'm kinda lost. I want to get an amateur digital camera with a good lens and all for under $500, or really anything thats nice for under five hundred dollars. I don't really have a certain type of "thing" or "subject" I want to photograph yet, so I want a camera that I can learn and experiment with. I'm going out on a limb here by posting this 'cuz I don't know if anyone's really into photography, but if anyone here IS (not just myspace pics people) as a hobby/job, your input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

The brief above was $500, that's why I steered away from Nikon and Cannon, sorry. If of course money was no object, I'd recommend a Cannon. WITHOUT hesitation lol. I've wanted a Cannon for ages, but alas cannot afford one :P

I agree with said below. The camera doesn't make a great photograoher, though it's very important that the image you have in your head, also comes out as that image. Therefore you should definately get a good camera :)

I myself, really like Nikon. (search for the older models to get in price range) For more sport or active photographing, you should get a canon definately. The better ones are good with movement photography. You can also try Konika Minolta, those are also pretty good.

If you want a great camera for little money, you can also try to get a second hand one. (Do try out before buy! There can be miniscule scratches on the lens, that you cant see with the bare eye, but do see on screen ;))

I hope I helped out a bit with the dicision.

I have a Konica Minolta Dimage Z3 (it wasn't expensive). You can google it to get local prices.

It's basically a 4 megapixel SLR camera with 12x optical zoom. SLR (Single Lens Reflex)is better than compact.

Obviously the quality makes one hell of a difference. 4 megapixels and above will give you very good quality pictues. Good enough for printing to A4 sized papers. 6mp is better than 4, but 8mp doesn't give THAT much better performance for the money.

The zoom being "optical" is better than "Digital" zoomed cameras. So go for OPTICAL zoom if you can.
My camera has auto focus (unfortunately) if you can afford a manual focus camera, that would be better.

It is a fully automatic exposure camera, with manual over ride. It has Shutter Priority, and Aperture Priority modes, with apertures from f2.8 - f8 and Shutter speeds from 15secs - 1000/sec. Good enough for fast sports (apart from the auto focus) to Landscape photography.

As you're not sure what you want to photograph, a camera like this is a pretty good all rounder. It's pretty good for Portrait photos too, the zoom helps there.

If THIS camera is out of your price range, try to get something close. I think it should be okay though (under $500).

Any questions you have about basic photography I can probably answer them. I've been into photography for years :) email me ok tiger.claw@btinternet.com

Check out my profile for my "myspace" page, it has loads of photos taken with this camera.
