pc locking up

pc locked up like 5 times in past three days while playing games and once in desktop.
it's not really easy to describe what happens and when, but ill try my best.

2 of those 5 times i managed to somehow minimize (partly) the game that locked up (lots of alt-tabing and altf4-ing) to go back to desktop (which still was partly locked up) to see some kind of vga error and something asking me about some hardware stuff that couldnt be fixed and it will use a software one instead.

now what is a problem?
1. vga card failing.
2. my new ram i bought a week ago.
3. no idea if its possible, but maybe new ram uses more psu power (i dont even know if ram uses it tbh and i couldnt find any info on google to clear that up for myself).

any help would be appreciated.

they kinda do. played for like 5 hours total in last day or so and it should have crashed 10 times if the problem was still there.

hmmm my dad experienced some weird thing like things got duplicated and shaky.
no idea what was that since i never saw that.
probably video card or monitor related though.

Thats good to hear. Do the drivers work well with your games?

the event viewer and that ati2mtag error therer helped me figured out its 100% video card problem.
installed omega drivers that are based on older version of official ones and played for like 4 hours total yesterday and no crashes.

You can eliminate RAM as a problem by using the old sticks for a little while to see if the problem persists. Although, it's almost assuredly a GPU problem. Grats if you found the problem. Condolences if it's bad.

Oh and I was just rambling about a problem I had with my new computer. I had 4gb of ram at i think 1166mhz and it somehow was clocked at 667mhz @ 8 something voltage. I printed out the factory specs for the ram, went into bios and set it to normal.

Would you happen to have any screenshots of these errors?

when i was playing need for speed carbon , the moment everything locked up i also noticed a graphical anomaly.
while not as extreme as the screenshot im going to show from google, it was quite simmilar.
the random spikey crystal mountain type of thing in a random place in the game.

as for error its a message indicating that the VPU has
recovered from a serious error.

Also, does this only happen with games? Does the computer completely lock up and needs to be forced off?

it happened in a desktop once. i could control mouse cursor though... alt+f4, alt+tab, ctrl+alt+del, ctrl+esc type of things didnt have any effect so naturally i had to reboot, just like those times when in games.

I eventually figured out the RAM was somehow vastly under clocked with a high voltage. So I just manually put that back to normal using the factory specs.

could you explain that to me ?

Anywho, did you replace all of your old ram? If you did, do you still have your RAM? If not, just ignore RAM for now since it sounds like a vid card issue.

yes i removed those 2x256mb ddr2 rams and replaced them with 2gb ddr2 one :)
and yes i still got those...

ps. somehow i still hope that this is just a coincidence (crashing began half a week after placing new ram in pc). pretty much like the fact that a week ago i ordered a new video card. probably my current card felt that this is the end of it and started to protest lol

edit: i might have found the problem.
event viewer: ati2mtag ,CRT invalid display type

That would also be a probability since you opened up your comp for RAM. A cord could have gotten stuck with the fan or a power cable detached.

Sounds like your video card could be overheating mate.
Turn your computer off, unplug it and open the case, check your fans (there should be one on the vid card itself, too) for dust and give them a clean with a can of air or something.
I remember the same thing happened to me last year, after I checked the fan on the video card, I found that it was so clogged up with dust that it couldn't rotate, afer a clean it worked perfectly.

Afterward, plug your comp back in and power it up and check to make sure the fans are working. Power it off, secure the case on properly, power it back up and you should be good to go.

Hope this helps. :)

A simple act of debugging shall settle this!

I used to have a locking up issue with my new pc, but what would happen is that my mouse and keyboard would shut down and everything froze. I eventually figured out the RAM was somehow vastly under clocked with a high voltage. So I just manually put that back to normal using the factory specs.

Anywho, did you replace all of your old ram? If you did, do you still have your RAM? If not, just ignore RAM for now since it sounds like a vid card issue.

Would you happen to have any screenshots of these errors? As far as your vcard goes, it could be as simple as a driver error or a failing vid card.

Also, does this only happen with games? Does the computer completely lock up and needs to be forced off?
