My experience with Vista on my new laptop. | |

I am here to rant about Windows Vista. It has probably been picked on enough already, but I feel I need to express my annoyance =Þ
2 GB RAM GeForce 8400 graphics card I got Vista a while ago with my new laptop. Looks decentish, but not that good. Looks don't bug me too much though, so I ignored that. First problem: Random restarts? I have never had this in a system before. As I am talking to a friend on msn a message comes up saying "Windows must reboot" and it does so without prompting me for a yes/no answer. After that, I tried to install quake 4. Went great. Graphics worked fine, all worked well. But then I tried to install the patch. Gave message telling me that my game wasn't installed properly. I reinstalled. Same thing. I am stuck on quake 4's second patch. I then install quake 3. Installed patch, all was well. FPS was horrible. Absolutely disgusting. on my old PC with an ATI 300 and 512 MB of RAM, I got 100 FPS. On this laptop with 2 GB of ram and a Geforce 8400, I have 50 FPS. I install jk2. Very smooth, patch up and all. No internet servers? Couldnæ't connect to the net. I tried SP, same as quake 3. I then install the original quake for Windows. 120+ FPS, no problems. Finally, today, I installed jk3. Worst experience ever. After I got the game updated and such, I tried MP. Same as jk2. Then I tried solo game. 10 FPS. For kicks, I set g_sync to 1. FPS dropped to 0 for a moment, and was a slight bit laggier, but not by much. I checked the "Analyze system" on the Jka menu. It said that Directx was "ancient". I clicked update, and it said "Directx is already up to date." Right after that, a random system restart So until I can get Windows XP back somehow, I will continue to be gameless on this laptop. I will just use Linux on the laptop, as Vista is too bugged up. For my gaming needs, I'll just use my old faithful outdated PC. |

I haven't run Windows in about six years and don't miss it a bit. Linux FTW.

It seems like the majority of your problem has to do with hardware, or at least I think. The 8 series cards have very poor openGL support which I think runs JK2/3 & Quake 3. If that is true, you can do that r_dynamicglow 0 command and FPS should be significantly increased. I had the same problem with my 8800's and it worked perfect with that turned off.
You should probably stick with XP until 7 comes out anyways. Unless you gotta have DX10, it's just a leeching OS that can cause problems to even those adept at using a PC. I personally prefer XP and free OS' over Vista. _______________ "Deos fortioribus adesse." This comment was edited by Augusta_Mintaka on Aug 15 2008 05:36am. |

only people who cant use vista properly are those so i like to called computer illiterate...myself and all my buddies run monster rigs with Vista 64 and none of us have issues that aren't normal for windows and easily fixed. _______________ Come on now, every Generation X boy wanted to be Luke Skywalker. Is it because he was a whiney farm boy from some backwater hack planet? No, it's because he was a FREAKING JEDI. He could block lasers with his lightsaber. He could levitate droids & rocks & crap with his mind. Come on, he choked two pig dudes with just a simple gesture. He cut off Darth Vader's hand and kicked him down a flight of stairs. He got his @$$ zapped by lightning from the geezer Emperor, stood up and said "s'at all you got b!tc#??" |
