Yet another school shooting in Finland | |
Casual - Student |
Less than a year after the Jokela school shootings of November 2007, we've had another crisis of similar magnitude here in Finland. On Tuesday, September 23, a student at a professional school in Kauhajoki marched into the school and opened fire at his fellow students. The bloodbath resulted in 11 dead, including the shooter.
We're facing a tough time in Finland, as we are forced to investigate just what went wrong and how the Kauhajoki shootings could have happened after all the precautions taken after the Jokela shootings to prevent such a thing from ever happening again. We have to come to terms with the mental welfare of the nation's youth and especially gun ownership policy will be put under close scrutiny in the coming days. My thoughts are with the families and friends of the dead students. With the risk of sounding morbid, these kinds of tragedies should be the needed incentive for any society that considers itself safe and well-founded to engage in some serious introspection and to realise that it is in these societies where the rejected, unwelcome, dissonant and troubled individuals are allowed to harbour their misgivings without check. _______________ Thanks to the human heart by which we live, Thanks to its tenderness, its joys, and fears, To me the meanest flower that blows can give Thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears. |
