LOTRO will be having its F2P launch on September 10th (September 8th for subscribers, previous subscribers, and beta testers).
While LOTRO will be "F2P," it is more of a microtransaction game. What you for free will be the starter area content, 2 skirmishes, 2 character slots, and the basic game functions like crafting and such. The game content you have access to will get you to level 20-25 rather easily (LOTRO has a level cap of 65 at this time). To progress further effectively, you will need to purchase quest packs. Quest packs will unlock all of the content (quests and classic instances) within a region in Middle Earth. These quest packs, like everything in the LOTRO microtransaction store, will cost Turbine Points. The nice thing about LOTRO is that you can earn Turbine Points (TP) in-game by completing deeds, which are exploration, slayer, class, and social achievements. You can get anywhere from 5 TP per achievement to 20 TP (one even gives 50 TP!). Deeds are limited for each region, but from the starter areas alone, you can get at least 600-700 TP. Now, you may be asking what does TP equate to in real-life money? Well, TP, from the best guesses out there, will be roughly 1 TP = $0.01 US dollars. Thus, from the starter area content, you've just earned 7 dollars worth of TP that can be used to purchase quest packs or anything else you desire. As a F2P player, I would first buy quest packs. The next level range quest packs are 330 TP and 595 TP, buying one will be enough to push you to level 35! Keep in mind that you can create 2 free characters per server, so you really can grind out as much TP as you want if you choose to do so. The above is assuming you decide not to pay anything for LOTRO. Naturally, free players will have limitations like a currency cap, only 3 inventory bags compared to 6, and such, which can all be unlocked at the store individually, but will add up to a lot of TP. There are a few strategies to pay as little as you can and get the most out of it. If you pay even a little on anything with real money (buying TP or buying an expansion at a store), you will upgrade your account to a Premium status account. Premiums have less harsh restrictions but they are still present in some form. Of course, if you subscribe and by-pass the notion of playing the game as f2p or with minimal payment, you will become a VIP and have no restrictions. However, if you buy an expansion that includes 30 days game time, you will be a VIP for 30 days and then downgrade automatically to Premium. This may not seem to be beneficial, but a VIP to Premium account downgrade removes many of the restrictions of Premium/F2P accounts. I do not want to list all of the details here, but I will point those interested to a FAQ thread on the LOTRO general forums. F2P FAQ Please post if you intend to play LOTRO.  id say most games that go from p2p to f2p or something simmilar are.... with lots of flaws. i tried global agenda trial and id say its no surprise it went from p2p to one-time-pay type of game. simmilar thing with ddo and lotro. personally i think lotro is rather crap. if you changed every possible name in game to something totally random fantasy style stuff... you wouldnt even know its lord of the rings. _______________ playing jk3 since 30th of january (2005), member since 1st of february.
