Hi guys,

as 'OK' as it looks....... NOT EVEN CLOSE! haha
so any sword fighting games worth looking at? or maybe looking for... since i doubt it missed any games that are already released.

You can't beat the amount of control you have over your sword in DBtS though. I think there are overhaul patches too that make the game look much better.

well die by the sword is definitely too old for me ;p
i need a game that i would be playing multiplayer in active community :)
if i wanted something oldschool id just grab blade of darkness.

as for NWN... the worst comment about the game i hear is 'campaign was boring'. why? because NWN is not your install, press new game and beat the story mode type of game.
the official campaigns are without a doubt just a demo of what NWN toolset is capable of.
since NWN follows dnd directly and dnd was always about creativity while playing and creativity while making adventures.... NWN is no exception. internet is full of adventures... some of them are longer than nwn1 and nwn2 with all expansions combined.
some of them even have voice acting...
sad that the majority judged the game in stupid way. its like playing FPS game and blaming it for lack of char development - its not something that should be there. same here in NWN - why look for story if it was put there as a placeholder.

anyway... bought team fortress 2 since it was 50% off this weekend. stabing people as spy or choping heads off as demoman will do OK to satisfy my hunger for blood.
for now.

As great as NWN was, it did require the player to be fairly patient and imaginative.

-off topic-
It's funny, but I always thought Aribeth and Bastila were very similar.

-

I just remembered a fairly old game that you can try out if you didn't already. It's called Die By the Sword and I think it's the earliest 3d game that allowed you to freely control a sword. It has complex hit detection and dismemberment. Although it's probably a rare game since it faded into obscurity because of Tomb Raider.

I did see a few copies around and there are mods out there to help make the game compatible with modern systems. I still have my own copy of the game and expansion that I didn't touch for close to a decade and just had it work again.

I did enjoy NWN(1) quite a bit (especially in conjunction with the expansion packs), although reading a lot of text ingame was never my kind of thing. Very little of it is directly voiced too, which is quite a shame. But it was a good game nonetheless.

I just think complexity is not the end-all be-all for games, especially not RPGs. The quality of the content is - both in terms of the narrative and gameplay. When it comes to storytelling, immersion and gameplay, I really cannot find fault with either the ME series nor DAO.

Not as many people appreciate NWN as they do Dragon's Age. You have to be an RPG fan to really enjoy NWN, but you could be either an RPG fan or a casual game to enjoy DA because it's easier to get into. It might be a little more dulled down than KoTOR, but I believe the story to be just as good. You're allowed to play a chapter in your past before the game and it is brought up quite often. A lot of people who play RPG games like to imagine what their character was before the story and DA let you kind of play out a few common scenarios. It doesn't focus on the mechanics that RPG games are known for, but the story and immersion which are arguable the most sought after aspects of such games.

Also, Mass Effect 2 probably appeals to a larger variety of people than any other RPG game in the last 10 years.

What.

compare new bioware games with every game till mass effect 1-2 and dragon age origins.
much more complex. more quests, longer storyline, char development, etc...
while i have nothing against da:o or Ma1-2, but... it seems the era of the old rpgs is gone.
id prefer someone else doing the more casual rpgs and leave bioware to make the complex ones.
then the market would have everything, for every mood.

If you wanna play something indie and cool check out Amnesia, it was made from the people who brought you Penumbra. Really good game if played in the right atmosphere.

Mass effect 2 by streamlineing everything made it much more accessible to a wider market. Playing it on hard is still extremely fun. They managed to balance the weapons and biotic powers aswell. The DLC is amazing aswell. Bioware really are a step ahead of alot of developers at the minute.

It sells well. Why change something that works for a lot of people? Innovation is risky - you could end up making pretty bad games. However, you could just as easily stick with a proven formula that will guarantee high sales and great profits. It's a shame that innovation is mostly left to indy developers and smaller companies, even though the big ones can easily afford releasing something radically new without having to fear bankruptcy.

Also:

especially since mass effect 2 and dragon age origins are in some ways the worst bioware games made. too simplified, too casual. the oh-so-popular dragon age had much less char customization, development etc than ANY previous game. not to mention the advertisement of dragon age... 'choices impacting the game' waiting everythere. i didnt see any more choices in game than lets say fable or witcher.

What.

call of duty isnt anything to do with EA, which in all honesty have released some great titles recently. Medal of Honor is a close call with Call of Duty and Battlefield is fun when played with a group of friends over ventrilo or so.

Mass Effect 2
Dragon Age Origins
Saboteur
Fifa ( not always peoples favourtie but one of the biggest franchise games they have )
NHL ( fantastic hockey game )
Command and Conquer series.
Dead Space 2 coming soon.

EA are publishing much better games with less restrictive DRM ( they learnt from Spore )

getting in control of the best rpg maker ever - bioware... doesnt really make EA much better it just shows how casual they want all their games.

'choices impacting the game' waiting everythere. i didnt see any more choices in game than lets say fable or witcher. im not saying they are bad games tho, its just the forced 'we gonna make this simple so it becomes more popular and then we sell countless dlcs' thing is very visible...

even as publisher EA failed many many items. hellgate: london epicfail is quite good example.

anyway i was talking more about the oldschool EA series.
sims, fifa, nhl, nba, nfs...
all of them had a good game once in awhile, but get this - why the hell spend time and resources making clone games every year?
the sims is rather good example... it would actually be a pretty decent game if not for one small fact - it doesnt progress at all. they released 10 expansions, then got stripped of every each of them and was made into sims 2. another 10 expansions... and then ofcourse sims 3 that has nothing again.

made a mistake with call of duty lol xD
still my point was that lets say medal of honor... where can it progress? if it decided to leave ww2 then surely it will be more and more modern. gameplay wise? bigger maps with more people. bigger maps, more people. what is that? battlefield.

id say better example is EA.
releasing same crap every year

the only reason they dont combine medal of honor, battlefield and call of duty to one game is money.
each of them were good ww2 shooters, yet they just HAD to follow the trend and go for modern terrorist fighting bullcrap. logically if you have 3 games that eventually will become identical - you merge them.

They just try a little too hard to woo everybody. Some developers try too hard (Crytek), some don't try hard enough (2K Czech) and some are right in the middle (Bioware).

Kojima is so over rated tho, MGS4 was a damn borefest, the game was great when you could actually play it but hell if i wanted to see cutscenes that are like 20minutes long i'd buy animated movies etc... MGS1 and 2 were amazing, 3 was mediocre at best and 4 was anticlimactic :P

I don't think they really wanted to reach out and break the genre. Most companies just make a game with an existing formula and play it safe. You can't really expect Vigil to try and do what MercuryStream and Kojima do together.

not sure what darksiders want to prove with that combat system stripped of stuff thats been in the genre for ATLEAST 10 years.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gZ605HGSAo&feature=player_embedded#
this is what the real game of that genre should look like. a mfkin castlevania!
it has everything of most games of same genre released in pasts 10 years and more. :)
ofcourse we shall see...
the only bad thing about it is obvious - console only.

Darksiders isn't really bad, but it is pretty average. It does remind you of Warcraft, though.

I'm not sure how the mechanics will play out, but Fable 3 could possibly fill in the gap for you. It's supposed to be less RPG and more action than the previous installments. You have Dear Rising 2 also coming up. I don't know if either will have free-flowing swordfighting, but they both will have swordfighting in some way shape or form.

i didnt actually *buy* it since i never wanted to play MP of it. since im horrible at rts games i only play them for singleplayer story portion. wc3 i enjoyed playing MP, it was much slower... but then i realised rts is just not for me. loads of great custom maps there that i played, then i got stuck in dota. i got league of legends to cover that up now tho.

darksiders IS horrible. i have no idea why it receives such good ratings. horrible dialogs, world of warcraft paladin armor suit... ah i could live with that, but...
its not a sword fighting game, its click-left-mouse-button-to-win game. it has such simplified combat... it makes me cry.
which reminds me of about 1000x better game - devil may cry.
even then, neither of those is really a sword fighting game. i want to have freestyle combat, not the game swinging the damn thing into the same attack sequence over and over again.

it seems im out of luck for now.
i guess ill have to live with minecraft and some other stuff for now.

You got sc2, play the MP of it, its amazing if you get a good partner to play it with and the custom game modes will keep you entertained for plenty of time, The Thing mode, Starship Troopers, Nexus Wars etc.... seriously you should give it a shot

also you like sword play, darksiders is now out on PC, so if you like zelda type games go for it. It's great fun.

i saw mgs, but it will probably be on consoles only and the sword mechanics while seemed cool... looked very stationary.

m&b would be cool if not for its both the best thing and worst thing - mods.
its like combining mods in morrowind or oblivion.
horrible.

Mount & Blade is decent as far as swordfighting goes. It's not as dynamic as JKA, but does have online play. Besides that, we probably will have to either wait for another installation of the JK series or possibly TES5(in all likelihood, there will be one eventually) might have good melee mechanics.
