To buy or to build? | |

Well, I mean, my good old pentium 4 is coming to its end......I'm thinking about getting a new PC. It's been a while...lol! So, is building a PC, ie, buying components and putting it together, more economical than buying a Dell, HP, Gateway, or whatever else these days?
I want something with a decent CPU and gaming graphics card. I bet some of you guys have had recent experience with PC shopping.......... _______________ Cleaning out scum and villainy . . . one wretched hive at a time. |

nVidia and ATI should work together! _______________ "Deos fortioribus adesse." |

Quote: driver support for new games is horrible for ATI
that might be true, but if we talked about high end gaming (mainly SLI and crossfire systems) they both fail at producing drivers for those on time. atleast lookin at recent months. Quote: but they just switch their superiority with each generation.
switched cards from nvidia to ati every couple of years for 10 or so years now. i can only agree to that statement. Quote: I guess its personal opinion but from my experience nvidia is winning hands down
i agree on current situation, but as i said before... everything changes rapidly in video card world lol _______________ playing jk3 since 30th of january (2005), member since 1st of february. I never had a problem with ATI drivers, except trying to play JKA. Although, I did have problems with nVidia drivers and Prototype. I suppose experiences will vary.

personally i disagree, i've always had ATI driver issues with new games, so since the 9800GT nvidia i mark them as the clear winner since that mark until now i never have any issues with my 460 but my ati card at work is always pissing me about.
But i guess its all subjective to personal experiences _______________ If you add me to MSN, tell me who you are Best Movie Character EVER!! |

Neither company is better overall, but they just switch their superiority with each generation. The 5870 was the choice card for mid-level gamers and the 5970 was the best card on the market. At the same time, nVidia cards suffered from temperature and noise issues.
Now the generation is run by nVidia, but they aren't clearly better like ATI was last generation. The cycle has been consistent for quite some time! _______________ "Deos fortioribus adesse." |

i find ATI cards to be terrible lately, Nvidia are really kicking ass lately on price and performance
i find that to be untrue. for every 'OMFG ATI SUCKS' thread on ATI related forums there are just as many 'OMFG NVIDIA! ILL GO BACK TO ATI' threads. that pretty much sums up the situation. i dont base that on just reading forums i base it on the fact i've used both types of cards for several years, i used ati in my work machine which i game on from time to time and the driver support for new games is horrible for ATI, good when they get them out but nothing like nvidia, which update their drivers constantly. I guess its personal opinion but from my experience nvidia is winning hands down _______________ If you add me to MSN, tell me who you are Best Movie Character EVER!! |

Using an ATI Radeon (Sapphire) 5770. Runs most games fine, although my variety of new games is limited to MMOs and SC2
One thing about buying the cheaper computer bundles... almost always the power supply will be inferior. A respectable graphics card should have a power supply around 500 Watts or more. I bought a cheap HP with decent RAM, processor, and DVD-ROM during Black Friday last year for about 500 bucks (preloaded with Windows 7, came with nice widescreen LCD monitor, free wireless printer, etc.). In order to upgrade it to a decent gaming machine for future games, I bought a 550 Watt Corsair power supply for around 50 bucks and the previously mentioned graphics card for 100 bucks. Bought both at newegg and both were on sale. Saved about 50-60 dollars from those sales/rebates. Anyways, it took about 150 dollars to upgrade my machine to something that could handle future games well. _______________ "Do or do not, there is no try" Jedi Master Yoda Dual Saberist |

Building it is always the best way to get a new system in my eyes. Boutique companies don't always tell you the brand of the part they put in, and if they do then there is usually a better choice for the same or less money.
If you're confident in putting together the pieces, you really can't go wrong with making it yourself. Although there are boutique places that offer good prices and warranty the entire system. If you do it yourself, you get a collection of individual warranties. Hardware, especially graphics cards, are running into issues more frequently today. If you research every part you pick, read the customer reviews, you should be fine building it yourself. _______________ "Deos fortioribus adesse." |

From my experience, unless you can get a complete PC for a huge discount somewhere, buying the individual components and setting it up yourself is not only cheaper but also way more satisfying.
Now, I'm not ontop of the most recent trends in the industry, so I don't know if what I wrote above is still valid, but I know that it certainly was a few years ago. You might want to just compare prices in the end. _______________ Find out more about the Jedi Academy Aurochs here and more about Masta here! Married to Kain. |
