Trigun is the best anime ever. Vash would kill everyone who has ever been created. Second best is Yuyu Hakusho. Yoko Kurama rules.

Well Dragon Ball in general is some of the worst animation I have ever seen. I think the real appeal of Japanese animation is the complex character development and story lines. I mean Monsters Inc. was visually stunning but the story was pretty two-dimensional in my opinion.

Good artwork is important to me personally, but not at the expense of the story. Although bad artwork can keep me from even being interested in getting into the story in the first place (as in the case of Dragon Ball.)

In the anime Shaman King a lot of the characters walk and talk at the same time. But that anime is heavy on the dialogue so it makes sense that they would be doing things while talking. It’s really clean animation plus it has great character development.

Buzz out of curiosity where is your friend studying? If you don’t mind telling me that is.

I liked captain planet... He's like superman, only that his cryptonite is pollution, lol. But when I'm thinking about it, I'm pretty sure that show was only made to brainwash kids...

hmm... explains a lot...

Exactly Vaughn. Many people think DBZ is another story or the original story the books are made after. This is not true. The Z doesn't mean anything it was just added to make it easier to know which part of the story you're watching.

What I'm saying in my previous post is that the DBZ TV-anime is not as good as the books. I know they're the same story (except some added things in DBZ) but the books are imho just much better.

Do this sometime Vaughn. Watch any anime, any anime you want, adult or child. Look for characters walking and talking at the same time. Look for a character standing still possibly switching back and forth between two characters. During that you might see an eye squint, or you'll hear the characters thoughts, or the other character talking. And look for panning on a single image. I'm willing to be that in MOST but I won't say all anime's do contain those. I do like to watch a few of them though. I'm just not amazingly impressed on the animation aspect of them. To use DBZ as an example, you'll see in fights the attacks going extremely fast and repeated motions over and over again, especially early on. Also watching that show though you can see the progress of the animation of the last set of episodes compared to the first.

hehe ioshee
Mononoke Hime
i know what that is

(totally unrelated, sorry)

Some animes do have bad animation, while some are good. I really hate it when people say 'oh, EVERY anime has this, Every anime has that.' etc, you know what im talking about. For example, one guy only saw alittle bit of sailor moon (or pokemon, i dont know). He noted that when they cry huge gushes of water fly out of their eyes. He immediatly said that every anime was like this. No, its not true. Thats true for most of the kid ones or some of the comedies. But, there are many different kinds... so remember; if you see something wrong in one anime, it may not be wrong in another. You can only say 'every anime does this' or 'every anime does that', once youve seen every anime. There you go.. thats my more or less ontopic ramble

Edit: just to tell you, the story Dragonball, is actuall Dragonball and DragonballZ. There origanally (sp?) were 2; Dragonball and Dragonball GT. Dragonball was split up into two different series; one when Goku was a child, and one when he was an adult. So, basically its the same story, but only cut in 2 peices (its a 3/4 cut, i think (3 parts 'DBZ', 1 part 'DB'))

Dragonball, no doubt. Not the TV-show called DBZ (not exactly the best show ever...) but the books, they rock.

That's the thing Ioshee. They spent a lot of time on that ONE Drawing. That's not animation. He's a DBZ fan. And also several other anime's I believe. And if you really look at it movie and tv animation is almost apples to oranges. Some feature length animation pictures probably get as a big of a budget as a television cartoon series gets for half a season or even a whole season. So the quality will be higher and I think the same goes for anime as well. Of course the movie will need more in it. Its goal is to make a large amount of money in one shot, rather than ads throughout a year.

Buzz is right about computer animation. It's just as hard if not harder than traditional animation, just in different aspects. Like it might be easy to make one frame of traditional animation, but it takes time to do thousands of frames. In 3D the majority of time is taken in setting up the final scenes that you let the computer render.

I do think your friend is watching the wrong anime though Buzz. There is some really detailed anime out there. There is some really crappy anime too (just as there is crappy American animation.)

Some of my favorite anime is SUPER detailed. Take “Sen to Chihiro” (Spirited Away) for example. Even when they are doing a pan shot on a single drawing you can see that they spent some time in that one drawing.

Actually my friend is doing 3d animation, and its not a simple task. you don't just push a button and the computer does all the work.

I know it's very annoying to watch the same movements and frames over and over again, animators are geeting quite lazy these days they let the computer do most of the hard work now. If you want to see a fine example of an anime watch AKIRA it's amazing. If you watch the speacial features on the dvd version it shows you how they made it.

I agree with you there, Buzz. That happens a lot, especially in tv-series. Movies are usually much better, though. A perfect example is X - the movie, compared to the series. In the movie, there's some really good animation, but the series are a lot more standstill. The movie still sucked compared to the series, though.

I've got a friend in school to be an animator, and he like watching anime, but I think he lost some respect for it. Anime is a really cheap way to do animation. You draw fewer drawings for it. You'll seldom see a character walking and talking in an anime at the same time. You'll also see a lot of still images of a character in anime, along with panning on a single still character. After he pointed these things out to me, I watched for them in anime's and I do have to agree.

Alot of people don't know this but should, When Walt Disney created his cartoons he made his characters have big eyes and exaggerated features, the Japanese tried to copy animation this and created Japanamation another word for anime. It may not have started exactly like dat but that's how it spread.

At the very top of the list for me would be anything from Studio Ghibli and especially the ones directed by Hayao Miyazaki (My Neighbor Totorro, Porco Rosso, Laputa: Castle In The Sky, Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi, Mononoke Hime.)

A couple of my other favorites at the moment:
-Naruto (Awesome Ninja anime)
-Shaman King (Great animation, but kinda’ a creepy premise for me.)

ive seen alot of anime series and movies so its hard to really come up with favorites but here goes:

3: Escaflowne - never actually finished watching the series but i loved what i saw

2: Trigun - alot of people bitch about the fact vash doesnt kill people, but i love the characters and the whole messege in between

1: Robotech - yeah i saw someone mentioned it below. its my absolute favorite. i grew up on this damn show. first cartoon i ever saw with actual drama and human stuggle. i only like the first two seasons. once it gets into the crap with the blond chick and the tanks i stoped watching it. that was so stupid.

some honorable mentions are things like Cowboy Beebop, Outlaw Star, Hellsing and some others that i cant remember.
