Hey, Just want to say that the Academy has a Folding@home team, so you can go to http://folding.stanford.edu/ and get the client. The team number for the JA is 31419. MEGA EDIT: There is now a nifty one-click that I've tweaked to work for our team. It's a quicker installer, and in addition, the greatest benefit of the One-Click is that it sets FAH up as a service so when ever the computer is powered up, it's folding. Get it here: http://webpages.charter.net/ulicbelouve/JAclient.zip This one-click installer is the simplest way to install FAH on any Windows 2000 or XP Machine. Includes -advmethods flag. Installation Instructions: 1. Download the file listed above 2. Edit the client.cfg file with NOTEPAD to your username and bigpackets answer ("yes" or "no" - default is "no". 3. Run the *.exe file. 4. The One-click will then create a directory (C:\Program Files\FAH), download the FAH console client, creates and installs FAH as a service in the registry, starts the FAH Service, and cleans up the extra download files after the install is completed. Thanks to those that are cranking out the work thus far, and I woud like to see more people use it. Any questions, you can check the site, it defines things more than I can. But I'll try to answer whatever. From the F@H website: What does Folding@Home do? Folding@Home is a distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases. We use novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously achieved. This has allowed us to simulate folding for the first time, and to now direct our approach to examine folding related disease. From DJ Sith: "The short story is Stanford is using the spare cpu cycles of various voulnteers to run protien folding simulations. It does this because it requires a LOT of computer horsepower to something like this, and Stanford's system's can't calculate that kind of stuff fast enough, so it sends data via the Internet to your computer.. you calculate stuff.. and then you send it back to standford. It's all done annonymously, and only when you're not using your computer (so you can leave it up and not se your FPS shoot down)." _______________ Jedi do not fight for peace. Read above Folding@Home is a program which takes advantage of IDLE cpu power. This means, it will not slow your system down. With your idle cpu processing power, it calculates the folding of proteins. (Read more about that on the official site) These results are used in making cures agains disseases, stuff like that. You can also make "teams" which are listed on the site. The academy team number is 31419. ( http://folding.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/teampage?q=31419 ) Installing the program is less that 5 minutes work. Then, just add your name, and the team you would like be with (31419), and it will run on the background, without you even noticing it's there. That's great Jake, glad to hear you're helpin out, even if not on our team. One thing though, to clarufy: it has nothing to do with how long you are online. There is liitle need for you to really BE online with thisd, except to get/recieve. One of my better computers is connected in dial-up, so it merely connects once it has one done, and sends the completed, gets a new one. But yeah, even if you are not on the JA team, still help out. Form your own team if you really want to, or join up with other people. _______________ Jedi do not fight for peace. That's only a slogan, and is as misleading as slogans always are. An additional note that I would make, and a suggestion to really any F@H user: I would probably make SOME form of buffer, like limiting it to 95% overall. Why? Well, then if you are monitoring your CPU, and notice it is at 100%, then it is not F@H, you have something jammed up. I put F@H on another computer of mine, and it wasn't getting any work done, but my CPU was at 100%. That was because something else was jammed up, so F@H was using 0%. So if you keep some buffer, it may help you with problems, and also let you know if something gets stuck, when you see it at 100% instead of what you set it at. _______________ Jedi do not fight for peace. For the screensaver mode, you simply right-click on the F@H thing, and select "Full Screen" You get to sorta see the molecule folding (not the fastest thing) but it serves as a screensaver, and has the prorgress and details on the left side of screen. You can set the refresh rate higher to make it smoother as well. This can be set under Options. _______________ Jedi do not fight for peace. This is the same as my comments under the news post: Well, I started the team, so I looked into a lot more items. There are no security vulnerabilities, in reality, as it only connects to GET the work unit, and to SUBMIT the work unit. Once you HAVE the unit that you are working on, you work on it offline, so there are no vulnerabilities through the internet, no more than what you might already be vulnerable to. IN terms of the CPU always being at 100%, that's what the program is SUPPOSED to do. It works out like this: (What you are doing)+(What F@H is doing)=100% If you are using 95% of your CPU, then F@H decides to only use 5%, and it doesn't disturb what you are doing. If, however, you are only using 20% of your CPU, then F@H can use 80%, making the grand total....100% In addition, if you don't like your CPU being at 100% all the time, you can set a limit on the total CPU used. I have mine set at 95%, so that no matter what, I have a 5% buffer there. This does help, as if I open a program suddenly, I have a bit easier time getting my CPU back from F@H. Although it is really simple. It runs idly, and it really doesn't affect any programs. I have played Splinter Cell, surfed the web, used Kazaa, Winamp, played JKII, and checked e-mail, all in one short perios of time, with absolutely no effect on anything. I had F@H on the entire time. So go get it. I don't care if you set the ceiling at 50% instead of 100%, or like me, 95%. It's just a way of showing that we are concerned with helping out disease research, and using our CPUs for something other than playing video games. "If a man has two coats, he should give one to his neighbor who has none." So, if you have extra CPU cycles, give them to research. You'll save some lives, maybe even your own, down the road. _______________ Jedi do not fight for peace. That's only a slogan, and is as misleading as slogans always are.
