Fun new Texas laws! | |

The Texas House or Representatives recently approved a bill that called for *manditory* reciting of the Pledge of allegiance to the US flag and the pledge fo allegiance to the Texas flag, followed by one minute of silence for "prayer and personal contemplation" every morning at every Texas public school. The governor is expected to sign this bill into law. The only state that comes to mind that had such rigorous "patriotism" was Nazi Germany. I can't believe the indoctrination into false loyalty that our children are getting in the supposed land of freedom. If kids want to recite the pledge thats fine, if they don't thats fine too. It's "free speech", get it? And dont get me started on this ridiculous prayer crap. Leave it at church or with the family, damnit. grrrrrr. edit: oh yeah the laws on deck are making abortion illegal, outlawing gay marriage, and we already have a 150 year old anti-sodomy law that is regularly enforced. I can't believe the backwards times I live in. _______________ My car is made of Nerf. This post was edited by DJ Sith on May 07 2003 01:06am. |

You know I just looked at the state of ohio's stupid laws and caught something quite interesting. Breast feeding in public is illegal. This however isn't listed as a stupid law because well it isn't. In Ohio its legal for women to be topless/show their breasts. There must have been a trial or something at one point about this because the reasoning is that breasts are not reproductive organs and therefore aren't classified as genetalia. Since they aren't genetalia, showing them does not count as indecent exposure. I live in such a great state ![]() _______________ When you are going through Hell, keep going. -Sir Winston Churchill. Buzz, do you know what state that is? I want to move there. You see that's not illegal in my state and the other day this guy brought his lion into a theater where I was watching a movie. It kept making these really loud purring sounds. I thought to myself "there ought to be a law against that." ![]() _______________ One of the Belouve boys |

No Fizz, Funny law week would be finding all the silly laws in the States. I know one state has a law that makes it illegal to bring a lion into a movie theater. I agree with most of what you're saying DJ and most of what you're saying Buzz. I think people should be free to pray in school if they want, but not forced to. I consider myself a Christian fundamentalist. By that I mean I try to follow what the early Jewish and Gentile church practiced in the book of Acts. The problem is that most of today’s Christian churches have lost sight of what Jesus really taught. What I can't stand is when "Christians" try to legislate their view of what they think is moral. From a biblical standpoint it makes absolutely no sense to make someone follow what you believe. You haven’t accomplished anything. For example what if homosexuality was made illegal. That wouldn’t make people not want to be in Homosexual relationships. It would just make them mad at the people who got that law passed. I personally don’t want to share my beliefs in detail with someone who doesn’t want to hear them. And nobody should have to hear them if they don’t want to. All I ask is the same from other belief systems. It’s because of this freedom of listening that I can’t expect a double standard. I wouldn’t like it if I had to read from the Koran everyday at school. So it all comes back to James Bond. Live And Let Die… unless you want something from me that I can give you. Then I’m more than happy to help ![]() _______________ One of the Belouve boys |

Well she was in her 8th month of pregnancy I believe, and California has a law on when abortions cannot take place. That's one reason it can be a double murder. The other reason is that the abortion issue is about it being the woman's body, and her choice to do with as she pleases. If that's to kill the baby inside her she has the choice. But Laci Peterson didn't choose to have her child die, so it wasn't an issue of the woman having control of her body. Where I'm from 90% or more of the town is Catholic. and the schools happened to be right in the same area as the church. It was actually worked out that the Catholic students would go over to another building for a religion class once or twice a week. The kids that weren't Catholic or parents didn't want them going just stayed at the school. When you got to junior high and high school the time for religion class was the time you had one of your study halls. Bibles being put on your desk, yeah I'd be pissed at that too. I'd consider ripping it up right in the teachers face and point out that I get to choose when where and how I worship, not someone else. _______________ When you are going through Hell, keep going. -Sir Winston Churchill. Buzz: They may as well be saying "you better pray or else". When I was in 5th grade coming back from recess I found someone came in and put bibles on every one of our desks. That pissed me off right quick. You don't want to know the reaction my mother had to it. ![]() As for the Peterson case... I was unaware the child hadn't been born yet. If that's the case he should only be charged with a single murder. I believe the embryo isn't considered a "human being" until it exits the birth canal. There are a small group of liberals and libertarians (yo!) in Texas. Someone's gotta dissent with what these damned facists want to do to our society. _______________ My car is made of Nerf. |

Make the Pledge of Allegiance manditory is a violation of constitutional rights. I believe the Supreme Court even ruled that you didn't have to say it. Also, how do you "regulary enforce" anti-sodomy laws? I'd really hate to be the cop that has that job. DJ you sound way too liberal to live in Texas. We should start a foundation to send you to California. ![]() |

You know I look at religious freedom being something totally different than what I think a lot of other people do. I think a lot of people believe that separation of church and state means that you can't have anything that is giving some perceived consent to a person having a religion. I think the real meaning of separation of church and state and religious freedom is do what you want. The government doesn't support any certain group or say that you have to be a religion or say you can't be a religion. So I really don't think there is a problem with giving a minute for people to contemplate things. They aren't saying "you'd better be praying or else." The Pledge of Allegiance is a different matter. Where I'm from, the pledge was said everyday in elementary school. It wasn't a mandatory law but it might as well have been. It wouldn't have really changed much. As for abortion being illegal, I don't have a problem with that. I don't suppose you heard abotu the National Women's Organization not wanting Scott Peterson to be tried for double murder of his wife and unborn child? Gay marriage? Not my concern, if they really want it I don't have much problem. The problem with the anti sodomy law is that these laws do not just cover sodomy so they are not going to be easily removed. They're similar to laws that made it illegal to swear in that the laws didn't just cover swearing. Other laws today have covered some of the other things these laws banned so the anti swearing laws can be removed. I think eventually things like these will be corrected. _______________ When you are going through Hell, keep going. -Sir Winston Churchill.
