Grammatical pet peeves

Someone else brought up grammar on another thread, and I can no longer keep silent. I'm generally not into nitpicking grammar on individual posts, so I'll make a general post on grammar:

-They're, their and there: People use these interchangeably all the time, and it drives me bonkers. Nobody should be allowed to enter High School without knowing this, but an amazing number of kids get their (that's _their_) diplomas still not knowing it.

They're = "They are," a contraction.
Their = The possessive form of "they," that which belongs to "them," whoever they are.
There = At or in that place, as in "over there."

-Your and you're: Another one of these.

You're = "You are," another contraction.
Your = The possessive form of you, belonging to you.

-It's and its: An excusable mistake.

It's = "It is," a contraction.
Its = The possessive form of it. Possessive pronouns don't have the apostrophe.

-Should of, would of, could of: All wrong! It's should have, could have and would have. Those can be shortened to should've, etc., which sounds kind of like "should of," which explains the confusion, but it's "should have."

-Who and whom: "Who" is a subject, e.g. "Who totally owned you in Matrix?" "Whom" is an object, e.g. "Whom did you totally own in Matrix?" It doesn't matter if it's a direct or indirect object or an object of a preposition.

And one last grammatical pet peeve:
"Someone is working on their combos in there." Note the subject of this sentence, "someone." That's a singular. "Their" is the plural form. If it were more than one someone, "Some people are working on their combos," okay. The singular form, however, is "his," as in "Someone is working on _his_ combos in there"--and yes it's "his" in the gender-ambiguous case where the sex of the "someone" is not known unless you actually want to write out "his or her."

Okay, I'm done. Now I'll post this and probably see that I've made some egregious grammatical error myself. ;p

Haha that had puzzled me for so long! But is it nowadays actually OK to say "should of"? I think I've seen it used in some pretty official and professional contexts...:o

No. Anyone who uses it in that way in any offical capacity should be demoted at the very least.

Good bump by the way!

Mine: 'I could care less'. This annoys me because it means the exact opposite of what people are trying to say with it. Correctly, the phrase is 'I couldn't care less', but seems to have been changed by someone along the way and the incorrect form widely adopted. The meaning is to express how little you care about a given thing, so by saying 'I could care less' you are in fact saying exactly the opposite. This annoys me far more than it should. Feh.

True! On any kind of chat thingy, I don't use caps and don't use much punctuation. It's easier that way!

Now some people have a hard time remembering all the details in grammer. Use me as an example. I had trouble with grammer and spelling back in grade school and I still have troubles with it. If I go back and read all the papers I did 10-20 years ago. I can see the difference in my grammer and spelling. I have come a long way. It takes a lot of pratice to get better with grammer and spelling. Time to keep on learning. Don't forget to proof read you postings. That helps me.

Here's another common mistake:

I hope this is not going to disavantage those of us who are dyslexic and are almost incapable of posting without making at least one mistake in spelling, grammer and punctuation?
I know that's not what this thread is really about, but a little tollerence plz DJ Sith?

One more...

To and too-

To = a preposition, or part of an infinitive, e.g. "to be," "to say," "to own" (I might do a whole post on infinitives!).

Too = Also ("Me too!";) or to an excessive degree ("Too cool!";).

OK, I guess that was a bad example. I guess I meant using a 'z' instead of an 's' for plural words.

Billy: as far as I know "warez" means "warez" its not a funny spelling for anything. I'm sure the kids would hate going around saying they're a member of an "intellectual property and software theft" group. :)

It drives me nuts two! ;)

What also drives me nuts are words spelled like:

rawks
warez
l33t
dat (instead of that)
da (as in, da bomb)
hizzy, shizzy, etc.

Nope. It's a predicate nominative (noun). Pronouns coming after the verb "to be" are predicate nominatives, not direct objects. Predicate nominatives are in the case of the subject.

A rule of thumb is this: If you say that A is B, you should be able to switch it around and say that B is A without changing the pronouns you use for either (though the form of the verb "to be" might change). For example: "I am he" or "He is I" (both are the correct form).

It's "who they are."

I'm REAL sore about the use of so called Internet grammar. Informally saying "cya" and "kewl" every once in a while amongst friends is cool. Putting that "u r" crap in the real world or not being able to go 2 minutes online without saying "OMGWTF" or "LOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" doesn't cut the mustard with me. It's like you're trying to broadcast your own stupidity (present company excluded on the stupidity comment :)). I realise its mostly kids that do this.

Case in point: my 13 year old cousin from LA. Before I begin let me say that I love my cousin dearly. She's really cool and smart if you talked to her IRL. She has the Internet grammar of your average 13 year old AOL addlebrained simian oaf. I can't AIM back and forth with her for 5 minutes without getting a headache. One day she decided to stop using punctuation. She kept this phase up for quite some time. Grrr

Let it be known to ALL JA members: If you turn in a JAK trial exam or email me or something official to the JA I will ignore it or outright fail your exam w/o reading your answers. Remember the rules you learned in grade school: punctuation, spelling, and grammar. :)
