Sen. Orrin Hatch wants your computer to die! | |

Apparently, Orrin Hatch thinks it would be a good idea to destroy the computers of illegal filesharers. Being one myself, I know they will never shut it all down, but I don't like the sound of the gov't putting in viruses to deliberately fry my computer. Although this is most likely just something he said to get our attention, it would pose as a serious threat to all that share illegal files. The virus would work like a 3 strikes your out, you can read more about it here http://www.macobserver.com/columns/thebackpage/2003/20030618.shtml What do you guys think? _______________ In nomine Patris, et Filius, Spiritus sanctus. |

Yeah but it's against the law to speed but cops have to do it if they want to catch a fleeing speeder. Think about it. NippleZ P.S. I hate it when people say, “think about it” at the end of a statement. It’s soooo arrogant. _______________ One of the Belouve boys |

because in this case its breaking laws in the process...the anti-hacking laws. so basically they are trying to enforce a law by breaking the law, thats not right. Isn't it legal for cops to stop a car that is breaking traffic laws, even if it means damaging the car in the process? What is the difference between that and this? _______________ One of the Belouve boys |

What the hell is wrong with people now a days? It is wrong to take someones work with out paying the money they have asked. Stealing is wrong! You wonder why you have it so bad in real life and why you don't have any money well it's because you steal! The sooner you wake up and realize that what goes around comes around the sooner you can have all the things you want. Provided you pay for them. Maybe if the music companies wouldn't release albums full of garbage and only one or two decent songs this wouldn't be a problem. ------ Nicely said Buzz. Unfortunately, music isn't about the music anymore. It's how you look on MTV or VH1. They had a big hand in destroying popular music as far as I'm concerned! _______________ Midbie Council Member #2 - Profile ID 2073 | Member of B@rtM@ulS@ar | Owner of Monty's 2000th comment & D@RtHM@UL's 8100th comment | Former Padawan of SilkMonkey & Arcuss JA Goaltender & NHL Fan | Fellow Rush fan to Axion|Plo Koon is my oldest JA friend Post your RL pics HERE! | Post you JK2/JK3 screenies HERE! |

See Javaguy now that's legitimate. Its another source with quotes from the discussion. My problem is that this person who linked an AP article from Yahoo had no mention of Orrin Hatch in it. So his report cannot be legitimate because he's citing a source that doesn't talk about. Here you go, Buzz: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,89719,00.html From the article: During a discussion on methods to frustrate computer users who illegally exchange music and movie files over the Internet, Hatch asked technology executives about ways to damage computers involved in such file trading. Legal experts have said any such attack would violate federal anti-hacking laws. "No one is interested in destroying anyone's computer," replied Randy Saaf of MediaDefender Inc., a secretive Los Angeles company that builds technology to disrupt music downloads. One technique deliberately downloads pirated material very slowly so other users can't. "I'm interested," Hatch interrupted. He said damaging someone's computer "may be the only way you can teach somebody about copyrights." The senator, a composer who earned $18,000 last year in song writing royalties, acknowledged Congress would have to enact an exemption for copyright owners from liability for damaging computers. He endorsed technology that would twice warn a computer user about illegal online behavior, "then destroy their computer." _______________ My signature is only one line. You're welcome. |

I don't know if anyone went to this guy's supposed AP source, but it mentions no where of wanting to destroy the computers of music pirates. The article from Yahoo News talks about the courts ordering verizon and earthlink to give the names of 5 people out for pirating music. Gotta question how valid this really is. _______________ When you are going through Hell, keep going. -Sir Winston Churchill. Yeah I doubt this would float. Putting out an "official" virus if you would. Think about it. Hackers having a nice gift wrapped virus there for them to take and use wherever they want. They'd never be able to make it float and I second DJ's final thot: the gov't can't keep up with the rest of society because it is not the gov't who controls and drives the internet anymore. It had it's roots in the military but they lost control a long time ago: centuries ago, technology speaking. _______________ Fact of the day: In New York City, rats bite about 311 people in an average year. This is another example of government not understanding technology. If you're of legal US age, you should definately call or fax or snail mail (no emailing) your local senators and tell him or her that your vote will depend on issues like this. I highly doubt that the govt will be able to wipe out a guys computer like that without the online community either a) flipping out madly and putting in new govt or b) figuring out how it works and developing a countermeasure. The govt is usually three steps behind. ![]() _______________ My car is made of Nerf. |
