you know, if you start with Yuuzhan Vong books, the old classics like Heir to the Empire aren't as good anymore.

The NJO series is very good. some the best books that have come out for a while in fact.

The Dask Tide Duology, whihc you are reading, is doubly good because Stackpole wrote it. Most of his books are starfighter oriented beacuse he worked on x-wing for lucasarts and enjoys writing about dogfights and stuff. His books have the most vivid descriptions of fighter-fighter combat you are going to find. Very good.

Tryst me, ther NJO series just gets better and better.

That's the book I started reading in the NJO first too. It did actually seem to lack something for me too. But its really an introduction of the things to come. You're reading one of the Dark Tide books by Michael Stackpole. You definitely need to read Vector Prime by R.A. Salvatore. He's a big writer in the Forgotten Realms books and did very good job for his first novel in Star Wars with it.
