Hey guys, I've been wanting to purchase a computer to use as a server but I've had no experience at this sort of thing so...any suggestions as to what kind of computer would be best for oh say 2 servers 20 people allowed each? Thank you!:)

Ya I didn't think about the residential conection cable I know I can purchase larger bandwith. I think renting would be easyer but it's nicer not to have to worry about the server crashing and not knowing when it'll get fixed...I think I'm right back to were I was.

The funnest way to do it is o make friends with a guy or gal (hah) at an ISP or hosting or colo company and put one of your boxes on their network. For playing around residential DSL can hold about 1/2 dozen users somewhat confortably. I'm kindof a DIY guy, so I wouldnt want to rent or buy. Build em. You'll feel better in the end. :)

And to clarify: Fizz is my daddy.

Isn't DJ great? Everybody give DJ a big hug and kiss. He deserves it!;)So would it be more efficient to rent a server considering I don't have much time on my hands now a days or just telling a sales rep to get me what I need?

yeah, if u want to be on the safe side with a server , it's gotta run a *IX system.
and dont save at the harddisks... they gotta be fast and huge as well. a lot of RAM is also recommended

The server I used was a dual PII 400 w/ 768M PC100 RAM. It had 2 drives in it running off an ATA100 controller and the nic was a 3Com 3c9x series card I think. It ran FreeBSD at the time. You dont really need that much horsepower to run a server (unless its a windows box you're hosting on or you're doing other things with the server). My server was performing a number of other things while it was a game server.

The processing power to handle the players is one thing. You'll *really* need a fast pipe to be able to handle the network traffic. 1.5m ADSL typically has a 128k upload speed, whch doesn't cut the mustard. You need at least a 512k/512k pipe to host IMO. A frac T1 or expensive DSL/Cable account is the way to go for that.

What did DJ have? I'm a noob at this sort of thing. I do plan on building it myself just because it's easyer to get what you want inside the damn thing.

You'll want to look at top of line computers that range $3000 and up(you can build it for cheaper though). You also need a good modem. Regular cable or DSL won't cut it. You'll need special suped up Cable like DJ had or a T1 line or something.
