I'd like to start reading some of the Star Wars books (like on break at work).

Which would be the best to start out with? I really don't know much about them at all.

The God of all SW books, also known as Timothy Zahn, is writing a book about Thrawn back when he was with the Chiss', before he became an Admiral in the Imperial Navy, if I remember correctly.

Actually MoS Rogue Planet occurs after Ep.1 The Approaching Storm occurs sometime after that and before episode 1. Going by publishing date might be a little harder than going by star wars chronological happenings. Here's theforce.net's novel review section. They keep it a bit more up to date than the one rocket raccoon posted. But don't have a buy option. http://www.theforce.net/books/reviews/novels_chrono.shtml It lists the novels in their chronological order of what happens. As for which prequel novel to start off with, why not wait untill Zahn's Prequel novel comes out.

The first EU book published was Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn. The Heir to the Empire series is still some of the best stuff. If you want to read all of em I'd go by publishing date. I've got all the EU novels that are during and after the original trilogy. If i'm bored enough I may organise them by publishing date. :P

I havent read any of the prequel novels. Where should I start with that?

I'm buying NJO books and reading every Star Wars book I find at the library. I'm currently reading I, Jedi. It's pretty good.

Vector Prime is the first in the New Jedi Order.

Rogue Planet(I think) occurs earliest, before Ep1. I really like James Luceno's writing. The Approaching Storm is 2nd or 3rd too, but it sucks ass.

Truce At Bakura is right after the last movie.

Well that's debatable I think. Shadows of the Empire could be called one of the first. That takes place between ep. V and VI. Then there's Truce at Bakura which takes place a few days after the battle of Endor. There's also the Bounty Hunter Wars Trilogy which takes place during ROTJ but has flash backs to earlier instances.

Hmmm....Well, I think I'd like to start with the 1st book and then go from there (I like to read things in order. I was gonna read Hitchhikers Guide again, but I don't have the 1st book).

So, which is the very 1st book in the EU? That's the one I'd like to start with.

Thrawn or the X-wing novels would be good. Stackpole and Zahn have done about the best job of keeping continuity going in the Expanded Universe and keeping the other stories together.

if I were you I'd forget all the prequel ones, too boring. I started with Timothy Zahn's trilogy (think thats thrawn) then went to Jedi Academy trilogy (those books pwn :D) then worked my way throught the rest and am now halfway through NJO. I've got 34 books in total
