Adapters. That's what this thread is about. I've just gotten myself a new computer, and since that little ADSL box-thingy is downstairs and my computer upstairs I have the need of an adapter to be online on the new one. That would be all fine if not for a minor problem or two: When I play JK2 I get "connection interrupted" once a minute, and if I try to connect to a server in Battlefield or NWN it says "failed to connect" (only tried those two games other than JK2). I don't lag in between the connection interrupted, and if I'm just looking at websites and stuff there's no problem. It says this on the adapter itself (note: it could be the barcode for all I know, 0 knowledge of these demonic beings): SMC EZ Connect 11 Mbps Wireless USB Adapter SMC2662W As I said, I know nothing about these creatures of the Underworld so I don't know what to post which can help you, so ask away and I'll try to find out. |

This might be a silly question, but..... where can I find this device manager? |

I agree with DJ Sith on this. There is another possible cause of problem though, that is, the USB side of things. Certain non-Intel USB controllers can be very temperamental. Check the model of your USB Host Controller in the Windows device manager (it'll say whether its VIA, AMD, Intel or whatever), and then head over to www.usbman.com to see if there are any updates/patches that could help. Also, make sure the wireless network adaptor is plugged directly into the back of the PC rather than into a USB hub or the front panel USB sockets, if you can. It sounds like you're using a wireless network in your home. Check the signal reception. Keep in mind that certain types of metals in the walls, neon lights, and 2.4Ghz cordless phones can screw with your reception. WindowsXP and MacOS X both come with little tooks to check your signal strength, although I forget exactly how to get to the windows one (star from your network and dialup control panel, right click on "wireless connection" then click "properties", then look around from there). If you can try moving your computer downstairs right up to your access point and see if the same thing happens. Barring all that you really should be using a wired network. Wireless = teh slow & insecure. Don't give me any hooplah about running cables. Be a man and rip open big hoels in your walls and start runnin some cat5e! ![]() _______________ My car is made of Nerf. |
