Low FPS!!! GAHHHHHH!!! | |
Battlin' Billy - Student |
Just wanted to know if anyone can give me some help here. I was on the Home server the other night(after a long absence), and I was only getting about 10-15FPS while dueling, and not much better when not dueling. The only way I got up to about 50-55FPS was when I was looking up at the ceiling. I set all my graphics settings to their lowest settings and set my resolution to 800x600 (as opposed to 1024x768), but still the same exact thing. OK, this is what HW I have in my machine: P4 @ 1.3Ghz Radeon 32MB DDR 128MB RDRAM 40G 7200RPM ATA/100 HD I reinstalled Windows like a month or 2 ago (note: didn't have this problem b4 that) and I've had this problem ever since. I haven't had a chance to see if any other graphics intensive games did the same thing (that's my next trouble-shooting step). Oh, and I ran PCPitstop to test my machine and everything came out OK except for my uncached disk access(it was on the slow side). Would that affect FPS? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Gonna try to reinstall JK2 this afternoon and hopefully be on the servers this evening! (GMT -5) And hopefully with at least an FPS of at least 30-40. *crosses fingers* _______________ Midbie Council Member #2 - Profile ID 2073 | Member of B@rtM@ulS@ar | Owner of Monty's 2000th comment & D@RtHM@UL's 8100th comment | Former Padawan of SilkMonkey & Arcuss JA Goaltender & NHL Fan | Fellow Rush fan to Axion|Plo Koon is my oldest JA friend Post your RL pics HERE! | Post you JK2/JK3 screenies HERE! |

LOL! I appreciate that GL! Actually, I didn't have a choice when I bought my machine. I begged and pleaded for an OS other than ME, but they wouldn't let me get it. Actually, I can't really say I've had any troubles with it. But I'd still like to upgrade to XP. Yes indeed, good luck m8! BTW, I remembered another site that may be useful, this time with tweaking jedi itself: http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/jedioutcast/index.shtml it starts off simple but goes into more depth on the 3rd page onwards. Thanx Gentleman! I'm pretty computer-savvy, so I did all the basic stuff on the PC end (latest drivers, etc.) and I'll definitely check out the tweaking site! I'm gonna try reinstalling JK2 and see what happens from there. Hiya m8, The following site contains loads of good tweaks for 98/ME http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/windows/index.shtml Get the latest ATI gfx driver updates from: http://mirror.ati.com/support/drivers/winme/radeonwdm-me.html?type=graphic&driveros=windows+me&prod=productsME98driver&submit.x=6&submit.y=5 If you have an intel chipset on your motherboard, it may be a good idea to install the intel application accelerator driver to speed up your hard disk. This site will tell you if you need it or not: http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/inf/inf.htm#me Oh, and make sure there's no unneeded software running in the background. You can stop stuff you dont need from loading when windows boots up by running MSCONFIG from the Start-> Run prompt. Just click on the startup tab of MSConfig, and untick the software you are sure you dont need, If it is a Jedi specific problem, then the best advice I can give is to uninstall it completely. Make sure you delete the Lucasarts folder from c:\program files, to make sure you get rid of any models/maps/config files that may be causing a prob. Then just reinstall and patch to 1.04 and see how it runs before adding any maps/models/configs back into it. Latest version of dirextX would be a good idea too: www.microsoft.com/directx Finally, if the probs persist, let us know what games you have that work ok, and which others, if any, dont. We'll see if there may be a pattern developing (for example, JK2 uses OpenGL, as do many other FPS games, but direct3d is used for many other games, so you may have a prob just with opengl) Good luck! I just played around with some settings again, and tried other a couple of other games. The other games work fine, so I'm pretty sure it's something specific to JK2. My video card doesn't let you change any settings other than resolution (yes it's a cheap one!) I did change the anisotropic filter setting in the game and was able to get another 10FPS or so, but it's still not what it should be. BTW - I'm using WinME. You can reply to this post once you stop lauging at me! Oh, and disk caching isn't disabled, it just is slow when writing/reading the disk unchached. Thanx agin!!! _______________ Midbie Council Member #2 - Profile ID 2073 | Member of B@rtM@ulS@ar | Owner of Monty's 2000th comment & D@RtHM@UL's 8100th comment | Former Padawan of SilkMonkey & Arcuss JA Goaltender & NHL Fan | Fellow Rush fan to Axion|Plo Koon is my oldest JA friend Post your RL pics HERE! | Post you JK2/JK3 screenies HERE! |

Hiya Billy! If disk cache really is disabled, then it'll slow the machine down big time. Make sure you've installed the latest manufacturers driver for your graphics and sound cards though, as the ones that windows installs by default are generally a lot slower. If you have installed the latest graphics and sound drivers though, it may also be worth checking your graphics card driver settings to make sure anti aliasing and anisotropic filtering arent enabled. Oh and another possibility I remembered is enabling EAX hardware support in JK2 REALLY slows down my game, even more so than maxing all the gfx settings and enabling anti aliasing/anistropic filtering etc! (probly cause I've not got a real soundblaster live/audigy card, its just a humble lil fortissimo II) If none of this helps, let us know what version of windows you are using, and I'll be more than happy to go into a bit more depth with regards to performance tweaking for ya!
