Tonight my son decided to stuff a button up his nose. I mean way up. My wife was all ready to extract it with long tweezers, but it was so far up that I was afraid he'd flinch and get lobotomized.

So we went to urgent care, where a seasoned M.D. didn't want to touch it for fear of making it worse and sent us on to the emergency room at Childrens' Medical Center. I was glad I had convinced my wife not to try to do it herself.

From filling out the first admission form until the doctor actually saw my son was three hours, by which time it was waaaaaay past his bedtime. Being three years old and exhausted, he alternated between being slap-happy and silly and being a little monster.

Finally the doctor came in. Being a childrens' hospital, the place had seen this one many times and actually had a special device for removing things children shove up their noses. It's like a syringe, only with a soft, spongy tube about a millimeter and a half in diameter that gets snaked up the child's nose. When the tip is past the obstruction (a button in this case) the doctor pushes the plunger and a little balloon inflates at the end. The doctor pulled it out and the button popped right out with it. She couldn't believe how big the button was when it came out. My son really didn't like this process and promised never to do it again. I hope, but he's three...

Incidentally, for anyone thinking about having children, yes, it's well worth it. :)

I'm glad everything turned out OK!

I guess this gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "button nose", or "cute as a button".

You should be fostering your childs creativity, not smothering it! Instead of telling him not to do it again see if hea can beat Homer Simpsons record of getting a box of crayons up there.
j/k :P
give the kid a candy for me (but something bigger than his nostrils ;))

I'm going to have kids, not for a while, but I will. I can't wait to have his or her first button removed! :) *teary eyed*
