(pardon my french through this :))

Anyone else think this is total bullshit? The media always has to blame something. Video games, music, eating too much candy, etc. I think its all a bunch of crap. Im 14, ive never thought of anything closely related to the violence caused by video games. Sure I might turn into some evil psychopathic rapist who shoots people for fun, just because I played Unreal Tournament when I was 10. Maybe I will want to go out and by some WW2 gun and shoot some people because I played Medal of Honor. My ass. And if it does affect you, you've obvioulsy already got problems, and shouldent even be let near video games, let alone out of a cage. Thats just my view, post yours. And I leave you with a quote from a comedian who I forgot his name.

---

"Have any of you ever been possessed by the spirits of Super Mario Brothers? You know the little voices in your head"
"You Must kill!!"
"Satan, is that you?"
"No, itsa me, Mario"

"I'm just eager go go outside and jump on someones back wanting a coin to pop out of their ass"

Imho:
Video games dont cause violence.
Violence is caused by the inability or unwillingness of an individual to conform to the modern moral standards that say un-necessary/un-provoked violence is not acceptable in our society.

You can look for a root cause that sparks someone off (bad day at work, spouse cheating on you, parental abuse, whatever..), all day long, but, at the end of that day, some people will react violently to a given situation, and some will be able to maintain self control.

Figuring whether this inhibitory ability is nature or nurture is a job for the psycologists/psychiatrists.

I think violence can be INSPIRED by video games.
I also think violence can be inspired by any kind of media(violent books/films/music/cartoons/tv shows), or indeed any contact with the outside world, so...

Video games are no more at blame than the media for teen violence. The games you play can be used as a scapegoat for any of your actions, and unfortunately it is almost always the reason for your negative ones. Violence is part of this world, blame their parents for smoking crack and drinking while they were pregnant, or blame the media for glorifying things like Columbine, or just say the kid was f'ed up..Something as weak as 'oh he played violent video games, thats the reason' should never even be a thought in your head.

Yet again - researchers, politcians and journalists have found another way to blame society's problems in something other than the breakdown of the family unit. People who go around killing each other - i think you have to look at their parents to discover the source of such abnormal behaviour.

P.S. I'm of the opinion that the world would be a better place without Politicians and journalists twisting every word they come across. It's difficult to believe that truth exists anymore. (OK Rant over....)

i like the idea of video games as a way of letting out anger, not causing it.instead of killin RL people, we kill the comp....

also, pretty much all videogames have violence, i mean even kiddie games like mario and banjokazooie (mmm that was a fun game...) you have to kill the "bad guys'.

now that i think about it, videogames like marioteach moral lessons too, like good and evil, right and wrong. kinda.

anywho, videogames would be no fun if they were all like pong and tetris.

Yeah, most people blame video games for violent acts because it may give people ideas, I don't your gonna go and chop someone up with a light saber... or be able to buy a gun to shoot people with without having a permit.

Good point. People are looked at strangely and often picked on when they're against violent movies or games.

I knew someone that was almost happy 24/7. She was actually the happiest person I've ever met. If there was an open field, she would have to run around and roll in the grass...she didn't have a care in the world. I've seen some people look at her like she was insane. I often wondered what they thought was wrong about being so happy.

My point for the actual reason for this thread. She's joyful and religious, yet she plays Metal Gear Solid. Does this say something? Just because she plays a game where you strangle and shoot people, it doesn't mean she's really going to do it.

Ok...I'm done now. :D

Personally, I don't believe that video games cause violence. Everybody has a choice. You have to be a mindless machine to be driven to do anything becuase you saw it on a tv screen or a computer monitor.

What I find most disturbing about the violence argument actually has nothing to do with violence at all. Think about this:

Our country gets absolutely flabbergasted at seeing two consenting adults in a sexual act, hetro or other wise. We are more shocked by acts of love towards each other than we are about violence it seems. Kinda screwed really bad when you see it from that particular perspective.

Basically what you have here is a group of people saying video game violence causes people to be violent. They then conduct a study that proves it to be true. That's about as legitimate as pizza hut conducting a study that proves how good it is for you to eat pizza.

All of the "research" done on video game violence has been in the form of seriously flawed, biased, agenda-driven "studies" grounded in post-hoc-ergo-propter-hoc "logic."

Our lawsuit-frenzied culture has grown to despise the notion of personal responsibility, and "moral relativists"--which is Newspeak for sociopaths--reject all notions of good and evil, right and wrong.

But pretending otherwise doesn't change the fact that we are 100% responsible for our own actions. People do evil things if and only if they choose to do so. Evil is a choice, not something that just happens.

I agree with you, Jello, if people DO go out and shoot people they already have problems, it's not a game of BF1942 which makes them go berserk.

Many of the "experts" (and none of them are of course gamers in any way) seeks a scaping-goat (or whatever the term is) for young peoples behaviour, first it was the TV, then came music, and now they're after games. What they apparently don't think of is that it might be the actual person who has issues, and this might have been caused by environment, friends, school, home, etc., can have done this, not some FPS.

What's more is that it's all too easy to get guns, but I'll leave that alone.

To sum it up, games are_not_what makes people go on a rampage with guns, it's themself/their environment.

PS: What scares me is that I can't reject the thought of Jello becoming a psycho-rapist causing death with guns....

I agree, I think that the chance for us to get a gun and shoot some ppl is smaller because we get rid of our agressions in a game, so actually Im saying that the whole world should play as many games as possible and nobody will be killed anymore :P.

indeed indeed indeed... and those ppl think they have a good thought why all that violence exists, but they never played any game, so it's just a thought... I'm sure we gamers know better cause we all played games and it doesnt make us violent so we know how it is ...:D:P

Morons...sheer morons...

I would ask if they put research into this, but I know they did. I also know that they were idiots about it. (THEY being people that are against video game violence). The kind of research I've seen was talking about video game violence...not about people killing people because of it. If you want to kill someone, go play Jedi Knight 2 or GTA. I've seen two interviews about Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City being the major cause of people shooting people. A few things about that...both interviews were EXACTLY the same. It was a waste of time. How long have people been naturally violent? Wars are not started by video games. People don't usually get involved in the mafia or school shootings because of a video game/movie. As other people have said, if they are affected by the game, there's already something wrong with them...

I'm done complaining and rambling. Carry on.

I agree with ya Jello. Games are made to not be real, yeah the are getting more and more realistic looking and with the types of games but they are entertaiment and any sane person can realize that its fake and not real. i use violent games to get aggressions out and have fun. no plot out how im goin to kill people, just because you can shot a gun in a game doesnt mean your gonna shoot it just as well in real life. people just need to put the blame on someones else besides themself which makes me very anger. especially since im goin in to the gaming industry for a career. just my 2 cents ;p
