recently i've been playing around with wi-fi(802.11b) this is quite fun and i enjoy driving around with netstumbler. but upon doing this i have found many networks are insecure, and offering free access to their network.

so i came up with an idea for a non profit.

****warning IDEA Plz comment not critizize************

so my idea is that i or someone else creats a site with detailed wi-fi security setup(its out there, i just think it would be cool to put together) then have a few people get in cars with a cantenna or omnidirectional antenna, and rive the streets of major cities./ when you find a network, you wark it on a gps software, and put a flyer at there door saying that they have an unsecure network and that they can go to www.blahblahblah.com to learn how to secure it.

now to do this you would need 2 people. One driving and one with a laptop(a cheap one is fine) then you need a 802.11b card that has external antenna support. you will need some sort of antenna on the roof of the car, and finally netstumbler which sends oput a radar for wifis and if one is found, tells you about it. so good idea or bad idea? suggestions? want to get involved? post here :)

Netstumbler program:

good wifi card:

(they also sell a few other cards, just make sure its gold, silver is crap)

you can make antennas or cantenas for under 20 bucks

Well, the majority of desktops run windows in one flavour or another. For 9x/ME systems, the desktop is nearly alway c:\windows\desktop, and for the NT based OS's it's : C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Desktop
As far as printing is concerned, don't worry about the drivers. As long as the drivers are installed on the host PC that the printer is physically connected to, you'll be able to print to a shared printer.
To send messages, to PC's on the internet you just need the IP address that you want to send to.
However, what you're talking about is effectively being part of their home network, in which case, you can send the message to every logged on PC on their home network, by sending it to the workgroup name of the network. See:

thanks for your response i was originally thinking about dropping a TXT file on their desktop, but things are located differently on diff. OS's. another idea, like you said is printing, but you need the drivers :(

plz explain how you would do the messenger setup without knowing their screen name?

I say wrap their houses in chicken wire to block the signal. :D

Seriously though.. WPA isnt adopted well yet in the wireless community and WEP sucks (although its a start).. Tell them all to run *NIX boxes and run IPSEC tunnels. :D

It's a great idea, but I agree with the last post about difficulties of execution. It would be very hard to narrow each signal to a single house. net send, random printing and other things would work great.

I think the motives behind this are great, just the execution needs tweaking.
The main problem arises when the omnidirectional nature of the wifi signal is taken into account.
For example, I may drive up a street where an unsecured network is operating, to find that the sign reaches its maximum point outside a group of 3 or 4 terraced houses, or maybe a tower block. The difficulty would come in pinpointing the exact location of the signal source.
To accureately do so would need triangulation of the signal strength along with a detailed floorplan of the source building/s.
I think maybe an easier way to do it, would be to take advantage of the unsecured nature of the network itself.
There are many ways to do this, including:
Printing your message to an unsecured printer on the network,
Creating a text file on an unsecured desktop,
Using the Windows Messanger service to send a message to the host PC (if they are using NT/2K/XP
etc
