I know. There's already been a lot of karate, martial arts, fencing, kendo posts but I didn't really see ,answers to this specific question. If I just missed it you can point me to the answer, but; with all that said:
Which martial art offers the most "real life like" saber styles? I know in kendo you learn the samurai fighting styles but you are required to call out your target before you attack it. And in fencing you don't have to call out locations but there is right of way and target areas to keep in mind. Any sports or arts more life like?

I must not fear . Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear . I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Iaido is just draw and then take a big hit. if you remember, with lightsabers, you cant really 'draw' in the same way. in ep 4-6, the saberfighting was modelled after kendo, so ive bene told. Basically, do what ulic says

Oh, and my other thing too:

Knowing how to use the "rods" or poles like I described below, is probably more useful than knowing sword arts. One can be very deadly with everyday things as pool cues, PVC pipes, yardsticks, etc. But it takes a lot of focus. But it is more practical. I'd hate to be the guy that has his spine broken by a wooden chair leg. I used to know how to do that. But sword art...no, you not gonna be getting into a fight and have a sword handy. Now knife fighting...THERE'S a sport. You can even gouge out eyes with a scissors if you are good a t knife fighting.

Yeah, I scare myself at night too.

I've done Kendo and Iaido, and I've manipulated stuff to get a type of lightsaber "style"

I have a replica saber, light up, unbreakable blade, that I use if I want to do such a thing. The saber will run a hefty amount, so make sure you really want into that.

Iaido is great, but very quick and "one draw, one kill" philosophy. Kendo, I think is just too much dicking around in the fighting.

My suggestion, if you want to develop a lightsaber style: study the various arts, of Kendo and Iaido. Learn how to draw, how to strike, how to hold the sword. Then, get a shinai (if you hadn't gotten one for training) and just practice stuff, creat your own things. Try doing dual-saber, just play around. Eventually, you will get the dexterity to use two blunt swords well. I have moved up to using heavier "rods" as sabers, be it steel or aluminum, or whatever. This weight helps out.

But visualize how you would strike, how you would counter. And learn to be agile. The best thing about lightsaber stances, is the nifty agility things. But it's all about having fun and just goofing around.

lol, i don't think any saber fighting arts will be used in real life situations very much, or you must walk with a meter long sword at the street...

first: apologies to all for resurecting an old post

second: a lightsaber is so little like a real sword you would have a serious problem picking a single style. firstly western fencing (depending on the style) may utilize the full potential of the light sabers' slashing ability, and (if memory serves me) its more of a liner form of combat. kendo's attacks are almost all aimed at the upper body, and still falls under the problem of being a mainly liner form of combat. other forms of japanese sword fighting usually dont utilize the ability to block.

one option that you havent considerd is the bo staff. since there is no one side or tip that is more effective than the other, this may actually be closer to lightsaber fighting than your other options. the only real problem is that a staff can be held any where and if it taps you, youre fine.

that being said, light sabers dont exist so no choice is really that good for you and try to mimick a movie is hardly the most noteworthy of reasons to begin martial arts.

Fencing!!!! :D:D:D:D

Note: first of all, right of way exists because if you hold your weapon out (presenting the line) and your opponent lunges on it, they would impale themselves on your blade. Besides, there is no right of way in epee, anyway :P When you hit, you score a point. And if you're talking saber or foil, the target areas exist because it's supposed to be to the death, whereas epee is a duelist's weapon, so that duels could be fought to first blood, if that was enough to put the issue of honor to rest ;)

This is what I know:

Kendo is practised man-to-man. Both wear an armour and you try to get a hit with your wodden staff at the enemy's head or chest. Fights only last seconds.

Iaido is with real swords. I saw some shops with beautiful weapons, they're really awesome. It mostly fighting versus air though. Following preset "combos". Iaido was the art of suprise attacking. There are tons of variations of how to draw your saber the fastest and kill the quickest. Complete combos on how to kill the fastest from bowing, from sitting, etc.

So which is more RL? I guess Kendo is the way to go as you regulary practise against human enemys instead of fighting air. But you'll only have a lame wodden staff compared to the swords of iaido ;)
