I will say that what was done to the SWK goes far, far, far beyond simply picking on him. Amazingly, it seemed to backfire, and he has adoring fans around the globe. But the kids who did it were probably expecting a far different result, and it could have happened that way too. I think the parents have a case. The issue the really bothers me is this: Copyright infringement. I don't know how it works in Canada, but here in the U.S., if I make a video tape, I own all rights to that video tape. There's a copyright office with which I can register my works, but legally I don't have to register a copyright in order to enforce my legal rights. The guys who posted that video on the Internet in essence stole it--irrespective of its having been inadvertantly left in the video camera--and the popularity of the video (over a million downloads worldwide!) means that the SWK should be raking in royalties from all the hosting sites. A few thousand dollars in donations? A pitance! _______________ My signature is only one line. You're welcome. |

I know that because his hometown his Trois-Rivières and this is in my province so alllllllll the newspaper talked about this at least once. "Lil' Cindy Sues Lil' Timmy" Friday, August 22, 2003 Posted: 8:20 AM EDT (1220 GMT) (AP)- Today at approximately 8:35am Cindy Stevens, age 5, who currently attend Middlefolk Elementary School, allegedly came under the vicious verbal attack of a fellow class mate, following the accidental spilling of paint by her. Timmy Anderson, the accused in this matter, allegedly called her a "Poo poo head". Claiming their daughter had sustained serious and permanent mental injury due to this incident, The Stevens immediately filed suit. "I just want my life back," said Cindy Stevens. She continued by saying, "And I'm sure that a big load of cash from Timmy's family will give me that." Patricia Albertson, a teacher at the school, said, "Derogatory statements such as was heard this morning cannot be tolerated. They ruin lives. I should know, I'm a woman." Another teacher, Mr. Gerald Geolet, said, "Wait a minute; doesn't anyone think this is a little extreme? I mean, it's only words. Can't people just ignore them?" I think it's rather pathetic. When I first saw the movie, yes-I enjoyed it, and yes-I didn't even think about how the kid felt. But only a month later I saw an interview that one web site (the one that started the petition to put the kid in SW) had with "The Starc Wars Kid". He seemed embarrassed but also seemed to have enjoyed the fame. Also, when web sites get an iPod and gift certificates for you, doesn't that sort of give you compensation for the embarrassment? You can't say, "Money doesn't heal the pain" because he's suing so obviously he thinks it will. Besides, since when are we letting "embarrassing others" be a crime?
