Me too. So My last few days have been interesting in a "GOOD GOD NO!!!" sort of way. Allow me to elaborate. I decided to finally get BF1942 last thursday, despite the fact that my computer (henceforth to be referred to as Carl) is 3 years old and really not up to the task. 500 Mhz processor? Check, I have a 533 P3. It'll hurt, but it should run.  128Mb RAM? Check, I got it upgraded from 64 to 256. Huzzah!  1.2Gb free disk space? Check, yeah I can work that out. Supported video card? Er... Hmmm. Maybe I can work around that... I have a TNT2 PCI card. But all that's okay! It should still run! Whee!!  So I install it and run it and it is Ssssllooooowwwww... But it runs. I load and play the first mission! Yay! This game rocks! I Win! Weee! I start loading the second mission! Um.... and loading... and loading... and go into the kitchen and make lunch... and come back to it loading... Grr.  I hit the power button. *sigh* oh well, maybe I should just defrag or something to help it along. Reboot. Suddenly a happy little message pops up right after POST: Warning! Your harddrive is damaged and may fail at any moment! Backup your stuff and do it quick! (or something to that effect) That made me unhappy. Scandisk came up and told me I had one or more screwy sectors on my hard drive. Wonderful. Windows starts to load. Next happy message: Windows cannot load without the file VMM32.VXD then a DOS prompt. Aha. You bastard. Well I poked around in DOS a little to see if anything else obvious was out of order. Hmm... I wonder where the Program Files folder went? And for that matter where is the My Documents folder? Crap. So my hard drive is screwed and I've lost almost all of my work for the last 3 years. You bastard. I just lost almost 3 Gb of Porn. You bastard! /me sighs. Stupid computers. Well that's the end of my story for now. I'm writing this from my sisters computer. I went out and bought bunches of disks to begin the Great Data Exodus to disk until I finish building my new computer or get a replacement. /me begins shanking the remnants of his computer. _______________ "It's because I love you. Hake sure you keep off site backups. All my mp3's sit on my file server, so if in the course of me screwing with windows I make a booboo I don't lose much. Same with mail etc. Healthy tip: partition your drive. Make one partition for the OS, the rest for mp3's/pr0n/whatever, maybe one for "program files". That way if you need to reinstall you've got a minimal loss of your blood and sweat. _______________ My car is made of Nerf. |

fizz.. thank goodness for KNOPPIX linux.. its saved my computer many a time. One time, my HD just went for no reason. Good thing it was still under warranty. (It was a 40GB) NOw, i have a 40GB and 60GB. ha - back in the days in win98 i had that often. thats why I have a HD for my OS only, it is simply way cool to have the power to boot from a CD and low-level format that evil HD well, what can I say, BF1942 runs slow on my rig, and its probably three to four times faster than yours, so I might be able to imagine the dia-show you experienced, but, yeah, when u're used to it, its fine. _______________ One of the Belouve boys, founder of the mighty FiZZsters Midbie council #20 - Fizz - #1933 - Jan '03 - Aug '04 "Renfield, you idiot!" |
