I am the type of person that likes to be out of the real world when I read/play hence I am here at a star wars site. Ok, with that said, I have read many fantasy books and by far the most compelling, best written and best work is the LOTR. Now you say big deal everybody likes that but have you really sat and read what Tolkien has done to his work. He has made up a whole new world from the beginning. Created new things, people and unspeakable evil. Not to mention a whole new language or several. He has refined it almost to perfection. His writing, in my opinion is extremely hard to surpass. A genius he was and the books I shall ever treasure as the best I have read.

There is another set of books that I like but not quite as near to the calibar of LOTR. The series starts with The Dragonbone Chair by Tad Williams. Pretty good. Along the same lines as Tolkien with swords and uspeakable evil lurking.

That is my penny worth,
red deer.

also The Dark Elf Trilogy by RA Salvatore i think its awsome i highly reccomend it for fantasy lovers its in the forgotten relm series that series PWNS! :D its about this dark elf Drizzt and women are higher than males so he didn't excatly get good attention from his mom.. his dad, Zaknaefian taught him to be a swordsman and boy hes awsome at it but then when Drizzt realizes she has killed Zaknaefian Drizzt runs away to the Underworld also he has a panther he summons in combat so its pretty much all about Drizzt wanting to get revnge.. its a 3 book series btw

All of these are great but some of the best books I have ever read are by Michael Moore. You want scary read Stupid White Men and Dude Where's My Country?. Fiction can never come close to the evil, dispicable, scary things that happen in your own backyard. As far as fiction anything in this thread or House of Leaves and God's Debris. That is if you like your brain sucked out, squashed, atomized ,reconstituted, chopped, diced, pureed, liquified, frozen, thawed, shipped to Alaska, then the moon, then alpha centauri, then back home, reasembled, and reinserted. They are the best MIND FREAK books. If you like to see the world from a new point of view:D or just to have it messed with in a major way.

PS.If you don't like new ideas RUN AWAY, RUN AS FAR AND AS FAST AS YOU CAN.

PPS.I recomend these to everyone I meet even total strangers. They are that good.

PPPS.If you don't believe me call me at home and I will tell you in person.:D

PPPPS.They have absolutely nothing to do with religion.:D:D:D

*flexes fingers*

Here we go.

Lets look at this by genre, shall we? I'm sticking to my fave classics, so this won't be for all tastes. Will drop some fantasy ones on yer head later.

1 - Comedy :D

The true genre of bookiness. None of that fancy deep crap, right? WRONG!!!!!!! Humour is the most wond'rous and poetic of all fiction and all who doubt me will face the wrath of my criticstick!
If you want accessible, classic humour then you won't go far wrong with 'Sense and Sensiblity.'
What! I hear you cry, LOL. Yup, you heard me right. It's a wonderfully satirical piece, with twists of language and a carefully structured ironic twist that keeps you laughing, if you want to thinik and giggle. This is of particular interest if you have the idea that all Romantic fiction is girls in dresses wondering who they were gonna marry...Jane Austen HATED that idea...
Another would be Voltaire's Candide. Candide is originally a French work, so you'd want a translation, but these texts work in a similar fashion, with irony being the conduit of the criticism. Of particular note is the chapter in Paris, where Voltaire has a dig at almost everyone he has ever met and hated, hehe.

2 - Melancholic misery, :(

Any utopian book has a dark side to it, in the lack of the reality, but the twisted view of Brave New World (Aldous Huxley)is useful to anyone thinking about colonialism, and has greater interest to anyone looking for a classic side dish to the Iraq situation. The question of what is a barbarian is thrown back in the face of the person asking...

Similarly, the allegorical Animal Farm (George Orwell) is a cynical look at the human need to elevate himself above his peers, amongst other things. Weepiness abounds towards the end if you like fluffy animals.
In which case, you MUST read Watership Down. Often dismissed as a childrens book (compare to Harry Potter today, people) this is perhaps my favorite book. It also includes a created language with as much basis as Tolkiens elven, for those interested.

Umm.....gotta go, will return LOL.

Cya, and happy reading :)

"Rainbow Six" by Tom Clancy is my favorite book ever. 900 pages, realistic situations about anti-terrorism. "Terminal Event" and "White Star" by James Thayer are also really good. Terminal Event is about a plane hijack/crash and a wicked cool ending. White Star is about a sniper who has a rival, its pretty good too :D

"Lord of the rings" is always a good choice. So is James Clavell's "Shogun". I'm sure I don't need to tell you what Lotr is about. Shogun is about an english sailor that arrives in japan in the 1600's. He eventually befriends a daymio named Toranaga. Lots of hijinx ensue:P (not really, but there are some funny moments in it)

if you like science fiction (good science fiction that is, not star wars :P), then pick up any Arthur C. Clarke book. Or Isaac Asimov is cool too... any of his books as well.

If you're not into science fiction, don't ask me :P
