I just stumbled across Lesbian GNU/Linux, a porn centric distribution based off debian. Instead of package management it has pr0n management. Man thats weird. Oh you silly kids!

Yeah. Once you've grown out of the diapers (red hat, mandrake, suse) go for something like slackware, gento or linux from scratch that has bragging rights. or if you're inspired roll you own distro.:D
For a starter distro definately go for Mandrake it's the best to learn on.

Its a tie between Red Hate and Mandrake. both are very newbie friendly. but once you get your feet wet with those and feel comfortable with it. Move on to better distros. One of the best linux distors out there right now is Gentoo. Its extremely flexable with the install, but it takes forever and you need broadband, unless you want to take a week to install it..In which the install for Gentoo is not recommended for newbies you need to know quite a few things before you can install Gentoo :)

Except for extra small distributions, all of them have the tools to compile and write software.:D

ISOs are disk images, they should be equal to or less than the size of one disc. No splitting necessarry! ;) And you select in you burner of choice "Burn Image" or any reasonable facsimile thereof and you should be set.
Anyway, DJ's right about Red Hat, it is the Win9X of the Linux world. But that's why it's good for the linux newbie! weeee! Also: Maybe I've just lived a sheltered life, I dunno, but I'm fairly sure almost all, if not all Linux distros automatically come with all kinds of compilers and programming language accessibility. Feel free to contradict me, I often talk about things I know nothing about. :P

Google "Mandrake Linux iso" and download the images from the site you chose. Have it d/l over-nite once you get your ADSL. Burn it on a cd using the burn iso feature on your burner.:D It's not piracy because linux is free.

I messed around with about 10 different distros and various unix's and came to the conclusion that Mandrake is a good starter distro, but you really have to put the effort into learning how to use linux proficiently at the start. (don't be scared away at what i'm saying) Get the Linux Cookbook
IBSN 1-886411-48-4 by Michael Stutz. It's as great a book as any and it realy introduces you well to the power of unix/linux. Chosen One will tell you to get BSD (Berkly Software Distribution a free unix based operating system) if you can install it, the software is easier to install. You might also want to try Morphix of Knoppix. They run of the cd and install nothing. These two are good to use if you want to try linux without installing anything. But if you have a friend with some version or distribution of linux or unix on his computer get him/her to help you install for the first time. If he/she cares at all about the Open Source Movement they'll jump at the chance to install any verion/distro of linux.unix.
By the way Unix (which linux, and the BSD's are based on) is an operating system first designed in the 60's and 70's but this means nothing about it's quality. Unix lasted (and still lasts in linux/bsd form) for decades. It's flexable and powerful. (Just you try to sort filenames in alphabetical order and have the output put into a file.)
Anyway the point is use linux or BSD.:D
