What would make the game more realistic? | |

... Here's some deep-thoughts by Jack Huxley...
What would make the game more realistic to play? Realistic as in 'like the movies' ?? Any possible improvements that everyone could contribute to? Maybe a USB-Light saber, so we can stand up and duel? Lets talk... |

More realism? =)
How about when you cut off someone's hand in battle, it drops to ground with saber still on (or off if it was originally off). How about clothing? Like robes and assorted clothes your character actually uses. (it doesnt help for gameplay other than making the game feel more personal to the player) (robes, armors, suits, jetpacks, shoes, helmets) Bushido blade influenced suggestions: No health bars. Non-third person mode view when in a duel. (view centers out to a point in the room/dueling platform) __________ Hanging mode/Climbing. (Player gets knocked off a ledge by *push/kick/punch/headbutt* and press the hang button to grab to nearest ledge, there could be a certain allotted time the player stumbles or delay before he can press it, so it is not abused) Piercing mode/Slashing mode/Cleaving mode = Each "mode" has its own set of moves. If you choose piercing mode, you have a set of inward straightforward attacks that are directed to pierce the enemies body and if successful, could ensure some direct penalty for that single limb such as movement speed and functionality. Slashing mode would be generic jedi type attacks, where it is a basic swing. Cleaving mode, would be a straight across attack style with sets of moves and if successful , will generate limb loss of oponent. Target locking. This is most self explainatory, I guess this might be wanted or unwanted by players, so as a selectable option. Useful for realism? Yes.. More emotes like the bow emote. Inventory system. Sounds far fetched but I bet its very possible. (this idea is stolen off of KOTOR) Customizable sabers: 3 gems slots in each saber, player customizes the effects of their saber with the gems they select. Could make this into the JO only. And have a reward system for doing some good for the academy. Neutral force: I am a fan of neutrality. And would love for a neutral set of force powers. I have no clue what they'd be though. It'd make it more realistic because of all this black or white crap going on in the movies and game. There is a large grey area. Could incorporate roleplay into this game to make it more realistic to the theme of the game. Such as, everyone's roles being logged into the mod's database. And you get a character sheet which anyone in the game can view your's.. say by clicking on your name in the scoreboard. The character sheet would have all your info, your training experiences, your title, your "side", and profession.. stuff like that Sitting in chair animation would be nice... School system.. Not what you think. You could set it up to make it so that everyone is rewarded points for attending classes. And you could use those points on your character sheet, so that you improve a certain area. This could make it so that , those who suck at something in real life, dont suck at it in a real game. Like they have trouble doing a jump kick, you could make it so its got longer delay for key input for each point put into it. Traveling screen. This is very far fetched. But.. a screen of all the planets. And you scroll around on it, since the galaxy is fairly LARGE. You could have a menu in upper right of all the actual servers up, and click on it and it centers on area of the map. What realism would it bring? You could fix it up so it plays a movie of travelling in a spaceship or something, and you could move from server to server in a single screen switch. and um.. blood. ok.. i rambled on enough.. (sorry I cant stop.. Also, a building mode. Could be available to only high ranked people. *see the perm char thing with the server of the char records* And with this you could build dojos, trashcans, training pits, training items, training objects.. anything. And basically what itd do is update the map on the perm server and everyone would autodownload it sooner or later. And to broaden the topic even more: professions. Like shopkeeper, barkeep, master jedi, dueling ref... just to make it more personal and unique for players. It doesnt even have to be actual classes with bonuses, it could just be on the character sheet. But actual classes out of those would be nice.. imagine a bounty hunter dueling a jedi master. You could make it so its very realistic in terms of those two classes dueling. Matched up so nicely, that it seems like a scene from the movies. Ugh sorry just got another SWEET idea. To add to the roleplaying theme and NPC idea earlier. (ooh just got another idea too =| ) So anyway, imagine 2 jedi padawan organize a dungeon crawl. I am not sure how this could be done, but a co-op over multiplayer with fellow jedi against NPCs would be AWSOME. You could make it so serverop or jedi master is in observer mode placing the npcs? And this is my last idea, the one i got in middle of last paragraph, could add a experience system. The more times you played online, the more mastered your jedi character is. Everytime you get a kill in an outer-server (non JO servers), somehow a in-program counter marks up one on your chart. And it shows that on your chart, that you have killed this many people. And with that, you get to add up on your skills. I am not sure how though this could be incorporated.. Maybe more powerful defenses/force powers/offensive.. Not sure..) Ok im done.. im just giving input =/ |

One thing I'd like to see implemented into JK2:JO that would add more of a realistic touch, though it isn't going to happen, is actual NPCs in Multiplayer. Not Bots, but the ability to type "npc spawn Stormtrooper", and have an NPC Stormtrooper [with the AI from Singe Player] appear. |

and i just watched the fights in EPII again... the jedi fight with their whole body! not only with the sword! they kick, punch twist around, spin... all this stuff. and they never stop fighting, they do all in one elegant move. thats what i'd like to too, having more possibilitys to attack with hands and feet and doing a more beautiful fighting stlye without any interruptions. see, obi wan was quite good in kicking jango, wasnt he? oh yes, why not add a mandalorian armor to JK2 >] and for pushing blasters: of course you can. you sometime have to catch the right moment, but it works. i love pushing a charged shot from the standard weapon pretty risky but fun and you can push guys to stop charging their shots for the bria pistol and the electric thing. another cool thing would be something like a jedi-warn-o-meter. you could adjust it, so it would say: "someone is watching you", or "some is aiming at you" you should be able to select different modes so it wont disturb in a fight. and i would like to fight animals... rancors... the three monsters from episode 2... javas, banthas, lol _______________ Aeth S'kray *June 2002 +September 2003 |

I agree that weapons should be more powerfull and also that the jedi is able to avoid fire easier. If you get hit you should either die or limp or something yet there should be more ways to avoid fire than just running, dodging and blocking. More acrobatics - sidecartwheel was cool when the reborns did it. Dives to avoid rockets. Another thing most games need is when a grenade goes off you need to be thrown off your feet and into the wall or floor or roof.
Lightsabering should be restricted as much as it is. Your moves mould around the direction your moving and you only have a few finishing moves to choose from. Put simply there should be room for more opportunity moves. |

I tried pushing blaster bolts and stuff, that didn't work with me, only rockets and other partical weapons. Someone said something about not looking but "feeling people" It can be done already, with force seeing rank 3. And I don't know about others but hwo many people actually play outside the Academy. Can you push _blaster_ bolts? I know you can push rockets 'n' stuff.
In my Half Life days I played around quite a bit with the world editor (I don't recall what it was called). You could make all kinds of things Moveable, and I don't mean just back and forth or up and down like a door. I mean you could make an object that you could push and pull all over the map, around corners and even shove off a ledge. Maps were delightfully interactive. Theoretically all the walls in the map could be made func_breakable, but that would _kill_ the framerate because the bsp would consider the entire map to be essentially one big room and would render every single polygon. You could put an area portal inside every wall, but it wouldn't be long before the whole map would be a huge hall of mirrors, which would be cool but not what we're looking for. BTW, what's ep3? _______________ My signature is only one line. You're welcome. This comment was edited by JavaGuy on Dec 22 2002 08:53am. |

I'm really happy to see so many people interested in this thread. I'll bring it back up to speed, and see what we've come up with here:
Adding the dual/ double sabers has been discussed by the mod team, and while *I* am for bringing them to the academy, it seems that in a whole, we want to keep the academy as a place to learn how to play the game, so you can goto other public servers and use the skills you learned from here to beat the snot out of people. I'm hoping to prehaps get the dual/double sabers added into JUST the training server, when it is fully opened for business, and not just for classes. With the mod that Chosen One has created for us all, you can push and pull objects, like the shields, ammo, and bancta canisters. I was hoping we could make it more interactive with the map, and we are trying to figure out which is the limiation, the mod/game or the mapping. I believe it lies in the mapping, which is 'mostly' static. Aeth S'kray's ideas about the clothes moving would be really sweet, unfortunatly that lies more in a limiation of the quake3 engine, and the models dont get to have that type of realism. I've had the pleasure seeing the Doom3 alpha, and man I can't wait to see that final build, and what games look like based on the Doom3 engine. Then you be able to see the hair move on your players arms, or I will be able to see hair move around freely in the wind. That's a nex-gen game thing, unfortunatly, and we will have to wait until after ep3 comes out (I'm guessing) before we can have a star wars game up to that level of realism As for the Ghoul2 system topic, its really a 'different' way to duel, some people might like it, others might not. Yes, it was once on DJs server, up until about the week I started it was taken off (by my calculations). All in all this is a great thread, and if anyone ever has any more ideas on stuff, please continue to speak your thoughts to share! -Hux |

I always assumed that deflecting the blaster bolt was a Force power, like most everything Vader could do.
Remember, Darth Vader was a middle-aged man on major life support and probably missing a few vital organs. With the Force he was frightfully powerful, but without it he probably couldn't even have dressed himself in the morning. I wouldn't mind so badly if playing on a level for a few hours left it in ruins, for a couple of reasons. There's already a No Guns rule in the Temple. We'd just have a No Destroying the Temple rule to go with it. Also, even those who are strong with the Force would want to be careful about cutting supporting columns and heavy stone walls. Nobody wants a cieling to collapse on him. And of course, if it worked like that, we'd restart the map every hour or so. _______________ My signature is only one line. You're welcome. |

actually, the hand-blocking-blaster thing is described as a force thingy. In "the courtship of princess leia", there are these force-witches that can block laser blasts, but one of them tries to do it, and she gets her hand blasted off because she's not strong enough in the force. Add hand blocking for jedi master rank!
you should also be able to lose your saber. Some of us already know how to do this appearantly, but it seems Ulic doesn't want to share this secret=P _______________ Second-in-command of the mighty FiZZsters |

Well everyone remembers the scene were Vader deflects Han's blaster fire (4 or 5 shots) with his hand. So the movie explains the weak blaster effect on Jedis or is Vaders lefthand palm more heavily armored than a stormtrooper chestarmor? (I really don't know)
Maybe force Push could weaken blasters or misguide them.Push could also be used to throw around objects like tables, rocks, boxes. Force Grip should crush everything eg. small rocks, not just throats of humanoids. Crushing ammo clips would result a small explosion. [edit] If you get hit by a lightsaber there should be some kind of movement and jedipower penalty. Why my limbs never get cut off during battle. In SP if your hand gets chopped of you should find an robotsurgeon which can install you an robotic hand. Cooool. This comment was edited by Ecomancer on Dec 21 2002 08:26am. |

More realistic? Well, let's see. Lightsabers are physically impossible, and wookies aren't real, of course, so they'd have to go too...
Here's one of my realism-related peeves about almost all computer games: Hit points and wounding. In almost every computer game a player can get hit a couple times and keep fighting, especially if hit by a "small" weapon like a knife. Have you ever known anyone who was actually stabbed with a knife during a fight? I have, a really tough guy in fact, and I'm here to tell you he was down for the count. He didn't walk for a week. I've known a guy who was shot too, and he was down for a lot longer. It does happen that a person can be wounded in combat and keep fighting, but in most cases the best he can do is crawl to safety. Now in a Star Wars themed game, weapons are super high-tech. I would expect a blaster to do a lot _more_ damage than a high-powered rifle from the 21st century, not less. Personal shields: Never saw any in the movies. The "destroyer" droids in the first movie were shielded, but that was it. I've always thought that personal shields were a really lame idea for science fiction, with the sole exception of the shields in Frank Herbert's _Dune_ novels. Historically, as technology has progressed, the destructive power of weapons has always increased much faster than the protective power of defenses. That's probably just the result of the law of conservation of energy: It will always be easier to hammer a target with enormous kinetic energy--whether delivered by a cannon ball or a laser--than it will be to disappate that energy. The age of castles ended when gunpowder came about, for example. Today we the technology to make much stronger walls, but modern weapons are so much more powerful that castles have not come back. Protecting something is a trickier engineering problem than smashing it, so weapons will always advance faster than defenses (excepting "active" defenses, like missile defense systems that actually shoot down incoming projectiles). The point I'm trying to make is that I don't buy that anyone in the game can take a blaster hit, even just one, or a lightsaber hit or a hit from any weapon in JK2 and not be instantly down for the count, if not dead. Even the stormtroopers' armor didn't protect them from blasters. Lucas wrote in the original novel that their armor could deflect a glancing shot but that there was no defense against a direct hit. I'm guessing that the Fett family armor had similar qualities. So if a character has 100 hit points, I'd say that the _average_ blaster hit should do around 800 points of damage (at least), with the very rare glancing shot doing less than 100. I'd do away with shields, and I'd have wounded characters move much more slowly and be completely unable to do certain things. There definitely needs to be much more blocking with lightsabers. I've never really cared for the run-up-and-attack-then-back-up-to-evade-the-counter style of fighting. It should be more like the smooth, lightning-quick sequences of attack and defense, each move gliding seamlessly into the next, like in the movies. Force Seeing should just be on by default all the time at whatever level you select. It shouldn't affect the Force meter. It should also be imperfect, like in the movies! It should work amazingly well most of the time, but not always. A lightsaber should be able to cut through anything. I always get a kick out of seeing people fight on the platform in the spike room. Would _you_ stand on a wooden platform over spikes with somebody swinging a lightsaber near the platform? In the SP game it could only cut open certain designated locks. In the movies a lightsaber was more like one of those knives they sell on late-night television--you could cut a Sith Lord in half with it, and afterwards it would still be sharp enough to slice a tomato, or something like that. _______________ My signature is only one line. well, i played on the ghoul2 servers too. i was rather unexperienced, but i remeber it was pretty lame. sorry, but thats my opinion you could not get a hit it impossible, because it was 100% blockable. you could even block a red swing if the guys stood onto your feets. so everyone used the sepcials. and i'm talking of specials only! lunge lunge, yDFA, rDFA, lunge lunge... I think JK2-fighting won allot when we disabled ghoul2. it added much more ways to fight. and last not least, tehre are few public servers with ghoul2.
and i like the idea of having the dual saber/double bladed saber mod on one of the servers (sorry forgot the name ). but please disable the dual double bladed saber (4 blades!). it adds a bit tactic, if you want to fight iwth ONE doouble blade or TWO single blades and it would be GREAT to have a JK1-like jump! it would take a second or two to get the highest jump and would prevent doing combos in mid-air. also it would stop jumping around and backflipping all the time. well, everybody would roll instead... you would have to make it more difficult to. last thing: add animated clothes. yeah, that would suit me. robes that wave in the wind... faces hidden in shadows... parts that get cut off. wee also it would be nice to get a free saber. not 8 different swings to chhose, but directly control the blade. for example hit left mouse button to control the blade aggesively, means moving mouse sidewards would perform a swing. and right mouse button hold down and move would do a defensive move, like moving mouse to the left, would arrange your saber in a horizontal block position. damn that post got pretty long again... P.S. (i cant stop) throwing things would be coool. as i said you should be able to interact with the surroundings... and a better control of forces. not a set forces you can perform... but somehow "use" the force. something like the JK1 seeing (you could leave your body and fly around through walls in the level). then maybe twist around the neck of an enemy to perform a grip, or somethig like that. or much more simple: make objects "gripable". that means you can "grip" a chair and throw it at enemys. _______________ Aeth S'kray *June 2002 +September 2003 |

Well.... they have a multiplayer saber-blocking system.
Its called 'ghoul2' I talked about it BREIFLY in my movement class the other night. Jedi Phr00t was quite good at using this system I hear. I trained in it for a while, but I have been unable to get support from anyone to attempt to bring it back to the academy, atleast on one of the servers Ghoul2 is a much more intricate sabering system. You can actually BLOCK saber swings COMPLETELY with it. Rather than swing and hope it blocks the saber in the current default system. Ghoul2 really makes duels much longer, because it is possible to run up to a person and be inches away and block your butt off and not have the saber touch you at all. The animations actually show this happening too.... EXCEPT... The animations dont change when using red stance. (I.E: if you saber swing a person through the mid section, they can block it, but the saber still goes through them.) So... that's your introduction to the Ghoul2 Saber system. Its built in to every jk2 game, its just an option you can turn on on the servers. Keep bugging me when you see me about it, if you are interested. If enough people wanna play with it, I could probably find another server to put it on to |
