Okay, this is a thread to discuss all punk music and the "punk movement". Don't come in here talking about how you are punk because you wear badges on your Value-village shirt...that's fashion, nothing more. To start, I want to clear up some things about my favourite band, Bad Religion. www.badreligion.com In my opinion, the "bad religion" isn't say, Christanity, rather it is ignorance, presumed superiority, selfishness, etc. I'll also post the links to the lyrics of a few songs that could be taken as anti-religion. Smile Empty Soul, A Name Unheard, AFI and Thrice are all high up on my list right now. I was talking to a punked out(bondage pants, metal dice hanging from a Kyle Katarn style sweater) Distillers fan today and she hated Dashboard Confessional. Punk rock wasn't and shouldn't be about talent. You want talent go listen to Eric Clapton or Eddie Van Hallen. Punk rock is more about ideals whatever they may be, screw the system, change it, drink as much as you can while doing these things, screw with other people, etc., as well as friends and others that feel and see things the same way. A good punk rock band doesn't start with "Hey, let's form a band and sound good so we can mass market ourselves to make money". Most of the time it's just a few friend's who just want to play music because others have and why shouldn't they. Who cares if we sound good? If you agree with them great. If not go ---- yourself. It's about comraderie and voicing you're dislike of the things you see around you in every day life. Oh yeah, sometimes it's just about times you've had and people you know or even completely random things. Punk rock is not a state of fashion it is a state of being. Good or bad it's just who you are. No mohawk necessary, although I miss mine dearly. PS. Who can tell me the begining of the use of the word PUNK. In so far as Punk Rock is concerned.There's a cookie in it for you. HINT: it has to do with the RAMONES(the original punk rockers). PPS. Has anyone checked out the Turbo A.C.'s yet? I have heard lot of lyrics that I like and dislike. Personally, if I hear a guitarist that can eat up a riff or a bass line that is downright awesome, lyrics could matter less. Thats my two bits. _______________ I'm crazy, not stupid. |

Although I like all music, I usually listen to punk, gothic, industrial, and some rock/metal. I've been listening to this stuff for years and, like my other main interest, paintball, I hate seeing it become infested with idiots. I shake my head when I see someone buying a plain black t-shirt with a band name in white...and paying $30 for it. Politics is a huge part of what punk is. imo, Punk is freedom, equality, intelligence, selflessness, and a big "Go **** Yourself" to the figures that stand against these valuse. The first generation of punks were rebelling against their hippy parents. I like punk, mostly newer stuff. And Punk/Emo or Screamo too. Everyone hates me for this, but oh well. I like some old stuff too (like operation ivy). The Ramones... well... frankly I think they suck. One note solos? come on! They are punk, their music just sucks ass. Half the kids at my school wear a Ramones shirt and instantly they consider themselves "punk". Its about attitude, not clothing. Hey guys, I love punk as much as the next guy and really admire Bad Religion(you who say they are pop and not worth your time are usually just as closed minded as those you claim to not want to be one of). Anyway I stumbled upon this truely awesome band that just so happens to include a guy from the old school scene here in Chicago. The band is the Turbo A.C.'s. If you're into Motorhead or any of that type of Punk or even drag punk YOU HAVE TO CHECK THESE GUYS OUT. They just played another amazing show on OCT. 10. I can't tell enough people about them. Here's their website www.turboacs.com and if you get one of their cd's start with Winner Take All or Fuel For Life. If anyone is ever in the Chicago area let me know and I'll take you around town and if it's a lucky night I can introduce you to some of the greats like the guys from Pegboy, Screechin Weasal, Rat Bastards or Naked Raygun(thanks to Steve, my best friend who passed, for all the great intros and friends I've made in this scene). OH rite... In response to that war stuff MoS... I think the worst thing for punk to do was to turn political. Punk rock at its foundation is to not give a f*ck. When you add in the complete opposite of actualy caring about the world...you just end up totally contradicting yourself. Punk and politics should be two totally different things. teh sex pistols suck. the ramones were the start and end of punk. i mean ya thats still bands around being punk and all that....but theres nothing new... ok im nerding myself out....gotta stop |

pun crock!! yeah!  another great book..."Like Hell" by Ben Weasel. It's a really easy read...i read 3 quarters of it sitting in the bak of the show i bought it from. 2 days. big deal...but its a good book. a great book. |
