Well... I get your point I totally get where you're coming from... At some points, they really screwed the story over... They made things simple, that aren't simple at all... Like "So HE gave to them nine rings of power" says the movie... HE did not give them... The Elves gave them, and HE betrayed them by making the ruling ring But hey, no problem about that... That's something minor... But Faramir who doesn't want to let Frodo go?! Or the Elves that come to help at Helms Deep?! This is never to be mentioned in the story... Legolas is quite possibly the worst character portrayed in the movies. I would say definetly but the way they make Gimli almost makes me cry. In the novel, Legolas is one of the most wise, seeing as he's the oldest, and the most reserved in his actions.
