For all Dutchies, Belgians and Rumanians, Happy Sinterklaas! For all non-Dutchies, non-Belgians, non-Rumanians, let me explain: Sinterklaas is the Dutch alteration of Sint Nicolaas, St. Nicolas. St. Nicolas was a bishop in the Turkish city of Myra. According to the legend became a saint because he once brought 3 children back to life who were cut in pieces and salted by a landlord. That makes him the patron of children. He also gave money to little girls to prevent them from becoming prostitutes, gave miraculously food to everyone in Cilicia, Southern Turkey, and saved everyone who was sentenced to death, becoming patron of prisoners. He also could calm down storm and therefore became patron of sea-cities like Amsterdam. Some 800 years after his death, his bones were brought to Bari by Italians. His nameday, birthday is December 6th, during the Sinterklaas weeks, St. Nicolas comes to the Netherlands (or Belgium, or Rumania) in his steamer (?!) from his home in Madrid (?!)to celebrate his birthday, on the night before, December 5th. On this night, he, aided by thousands of loyal Moorish servants (black slaves ?!), dressed in colourfull 16th century costumes with feathers (?!) climbs the roofs of all houses with his horse Amerigo (?!) and drops presents down the chimney (?!). Only children who have been sweet all year get presents, St. Nicolas knows because his black servants, Zwarte Pieten (black peters) spy on the children all year, and he writes everything down in Het Grote boek van Sinterklaas (the big book of st. Nicolas) (?!). Children who have not been sweet are taken care of by the Zwarte Pieten, they are armed with rods to punish them or they can put them in a bag and take them back to Spain. During the Sinterklaas weeks, all children sing special very old Sinterklaas songs at the fireplace and put their shoe next to it, together with some water, straw and a carrot for St. Nicolas' horse. The next day they will find the water gone and their shoes full of pepernoten (special candy) and chocalate letters. Basically: Dutch parents lie to their kids and gladly participate in the tradition, installed by capitalists, to buy as many presents for their kids, and give credit to a 1500 year old saint who lives in Spain, has a steamer, thousands of black slaves and can ride a horse on top of roofs, and manages to get presents down a chimney. At a certain age, the children are told they have been consequently lied to but they don't care, since they've been well rewarded  Sinterklaas eventually became Santa Claus. _______________ Ceterum censeo Carthaginem esse delendam |

Actually Buzz, I wasn't brought up Catholic but my family did it. I always thought it was a European thing.
