OK heres the problem. I want to make some lightsaber effects in photoshop.I've read how to do it in 5.5 version, but 7.0 is way different in the layers dept. now. Can anyone tell me how to do this?;)

The most simple way (I can think of)to do that in photoshop 7 would be to create a rectangular form with curved corners in one layer that we'll call layer 1.

Select the color you want for your lightsaber to draw this rectangular form. Ok, for now we're done with layer 1.

Step 2, duplicate layer 1 twice, and change the forms colors this way:

- layer 2: color must be brighter than in layer 1 but not too bright (I use the upper part of the color selection tool)

- layer 3: color must be close to white with slight nuances in the layer 1 rectanglur form color.

Now you have 3 rectangular forms superposed so we need some effect to get the saber blurry look.
On layer 1, add some blur effect, I would say directional blur, in two directions, let's say, for a vertical saber, 45° and 135°. Set the amount of pixel that will be blurred.

On layer 2, just add the gaussian blur effect, with a value of around 2-3. Then again use your own sensitivity to set it.

On layer 3, use a very light gaussian effect, just to smooth the borders of you rectangular form, so set the value of gaussian blur around 0.2 to 0.5, just play with it to get the wanted rendering.

Once you've completed those steps, you should get the effect you wanted, ie a bar that looks like a lightsaber. If you just save the bar, you'll be able to change the look of it by changing the colors balance in your pic and you'll be able to copy/paste it into any new image you create.

Well, I hope it's clear enough and helpful.
Friendly,
